Why does every job site ask for a certificate of insurance?

A certificate (COI) is a one-page summary showing your policies are in force: the limits, the dates and the insurance companies. General contractors and property owners ask for one before you start work.

Good to know: if a contract says the owner or general contractor must be an additional insured, the certificate alone doesn't do it. Your policy needs the right endorsement first, and the certificate then shows it.
