From December 2007 to June 2009 global economies went through a “Great Recession.” Primarily because of shady banking practices in the housing markets. This also lead to a decline in property tax revenue, which leads to cuts in streets and sanitation services. Cuts in any service tend to hurt the people that need them most. The vision of the Green & Clean is much large than picking up trash and cu
tting. Unconventional Coalition actually wants other organizations to copy, recreate, or reinvent our Green & Clean Projects. We envision world communities work together to come up with sustainable solutions that green and clean issues. The rapper, Kendrick Lamar composed a song, “Institutionalized,” that explains some of the physiological problems that stem from our social institutions. The line from the song that best explains Unconventional Coalition’s Green & Clean Project’s mission is, “I should've listened when my grandmama said to me, **** don't change until you get up and wash yo' ***, *****.” We think the same applies to the community. The primary goal of the Green & Clean Projects is to make visual changes through community development. Now we have communities that do not receive basics services. One service that stands out most to Unconventional Coalition is the maintenance of vacant lots and houses by the City of Chicago. Chicago’s Department of Streets and Sanitation has a program lends basic tools (brooms, rakes, shovels, and bags) to organizations that have volunteers that are willing to assist with the problem.
