Long-Term Care or Extended Care can be described in many different ways and often is from using scare tactics, to percentages, to the exhorbitant costs of care. If you have ever been a full time care giver to a loved one there is no explanation required as you get it. In a nut shell Long-Term Care is about choice and quality of care for the loved one who can no longer fully care for themself for a variety of reasons, most often due to the aging process. It is also about the quality of life for the care giver and the tremendous stresses involved with assuming a 24/7/365 caregiving role. How well you plan in advance will largely determine how well you and your family will do with both of these primary issues. Step #1 in all instances is to have the conversation in advance and not wait until that 911 call comes in. Thousands have lost everything and or been severely affected by Hurricane Florence. While many feel blessed to have dodged a bullet there are many more who did not. Southeaster Brokerage Group will be heading to the coast tomorrow with a load of relief supplies around noon. If you would like to help send us a PM or call us and we will meet up with you. Needed supplies include, bleach, water, pet food, paper goods, toiletries and mold and mildew treatments. The flood damage is widespread and time is not on their side. The power of youth coupled with the power of social media fueled Southeastern Brokerage Group's summer service project this year. Our very own Kaitlyn McCarthy, CLTC (left) is pictured with Marium D a local Charlotte high school student. Kaitlyn met Marium after reading about her quest to put together toiletry bags for the less fortunate on her neighborhood social media site. We learned that government assistance programs such as the "Food Stamp Program" often do not cover basic toiletry items such as soap, shampoo, tooth paste, tooth brushes, etc. it was our distinct pleasure to meet Marium and help her to meet her goal by putting together several toiletry bags. In the process we were able to help her provide several basic items for others that you and I take for granite everyday. It was also very heart warming to meet a young person who had her sites on giving back to her community and to those who are less fortunate. Great job Marium!!

WHAT IF.......weather events, storms, etc just came with no warning and you weren't able to prepare for their arrival? WHAT IF...Heaven forbid you weren't able to get to the grocery store before the arrival of that next big snow storm. Life often happens just like that, with no warning, which is why it is imperative to plan ahead. The first step is to understand the issues and where you and or your family may be vulnerable. Let's start with the basics: 1) Do you have a Will, Health Care Power of Attorney, HIPPA Health Care Authorization. 2) If you have kids under 18, have you designated a Guardian(s)? If you haven't the State will. 3)Think you have enough life insurance? Do you know how much is enough? Where will those who depend on you be left if you weren't here? 4) Do you expect to live a long life? Who will care for you when you can't? Where do you want to receive that care? Do you have an idea of how much that will cost?

OK, we get it, that is not going to happen to you. Ok then....... what about your parents? Have you talked with them about Extended Care? Seem overwhelming?
