Here's something I wish more people knew before they ever needed it.

When you go to the emergency room with Medicare, you are covered. That part is true. But the bill that shows up afterward? That's where a lot of people get caught off guard.

Here's the part that surprises people most.

Urgent care and the ER are not the same thing in Medicare's eyes. If you've got a bad cut, a high fever, a sprained ankle, something that needs attention but isn't life threatening, urgent care is almost always the smarter and significantly cheaper move.

The rule of thumb I give everyone is this. Chest pain, stroke symptoms, serious injury, anything that feels truly life threatening, get to the ER immediately. Everything else? Your closest urgent care is worth considering first.

And do you even know where the closest urgent care is in to you? That's worth knowing before you need it!

If you have a Medicare Supplement or Advantage plan, your costs in either situation may look different depending on your specific coverage. Really important to know ahead of time rather than in the moment!

Not sure what your plan covers in an emergency? That's a quick conversation and one worth having before summer gets going.

DM me the word SUMMER and let's make sure you're covered!

Every single person I sit down with before summer gets a copy of this checklist.

Not because I have to give it to them. Because I genuinely want them to feel prepared going into the next few months. I want them to know where they stand. I want them to be able to enjoy their summer without anything sneaking up on them.

And honestly? Everyone deserves that. Not just the people I work with directly.

So I'm putting it here.

The 5 Things to Check About Your Medicare Before Summer Gets Going is the same checklist I walk through with my own clients. Five things. Ten minutes. Plain English.

If you have Medicare, this is for you. If you have a parent or grandparent on Medicare, this is for them too. Share it. Pass it along. The more people who feel confident about their coverage going into summer the better.

It is completely free and I am so happy to share it!

I know what you're thinking. Medicare stuff is for October. That's when open enrollment is. That's when I'll deal with it.

And I get it! That's what most people do.

But here's what I've watched happen over and over again.

October rolls around. The mail starts coming. The phone starts ringing. Everyone is suddenly talking about Medicare at the same time. And people who waited are now trying to make really important decisions about their coverage in a six week window while feeling rushed and overwhelmed.

Compare that to right now.

No pressure. No deadline. No stack of mailers on the kitchen counter. Just a calm, unhurried conversation about whether your plan is actually still working for you.

Here's what's worth asking yourself right now.

Did any of your doctors change this year? Did your prescriptions change? Did anything big happen in your life — a move, a new health condition, more travel than usual?

If you answered yes to any of those, your plan might need a second look. And doing that second look in June instead of October means you have plenty of time to make a good decision without any pressure.

The people who feel most confident going into open enrollment every year? They're the ones who already know where they stand before it starts.

I'd love to help you be one of those people!

DM me the word SUMMER and let's have that conversation now while it's still easy.

When do you usually start thinking about your Medicare coverage?

Summer has a way of reminding you that your body needs things Medicare doesn't always cover.

Let me explain what I mean.

You spend a weekend outside and your eyes are bothering you. You head to a outdoor concert and realize your hearing isn't quite what it used to be. You've been putting off that dentist appointment all year and suddenly your tooth is really making itself known.

Here's the thing most people don't know until they need it.

Original Medicare does not cover routine dental care. Cleanings, fillings, dentures, extractions. Not covered.
Original Medicare does not cover routine vision. Eye exams for glasses or contacts. Not covered.
Original Medicare does not cover routine hearing exams or hearing aids.

Now before you panic, two important things.

1️⃣ First, Medicare does cover certain eye and ear related care when it's connected to a diagnosed medical condition. So it's not completely excluded.

2️⃣ Second, and this is the big one, many Medicare Advantage plans do include dental, vision, and hearing benefits. The coverage varies a lot from plan to plan but it's worth knowing exactly what yours includes.

If you've been putting off a dentist appointment or an eye exam because you assumed Medicare had it covered, this is your nudge to check your specific plan before summer is over!

Not sure what your plan includes? That is a five minute conversation.

DM me the word SUMMER and let's take a look!

Did you know Original Medicare didn't cover these things?

Seriously. Right now. Or put it on your to-do list for tomorrow morning.

Call the member services number on the back of your Medicare Advantage card and ask them this exactly:

"Does my coverage follow me when I travel outside my service area?"

That's it. One question. Five minutes.

Because the answer varies a lot depending on your specific plan. Some Advantage plans cover you pretty well when you're away from home. Others only cover true emergencies outside your area. And most people have absolutely no idea which one they have until they actually need care somewhere new.

Knowing the answer now means no surprises later. And that is worth five minutes of your time before summer gets going!

Tag someone who needs to make this call!

You know that thing where it's 11pm and you're supposed to be asleep but instead you're three pages deep into a Google rabbit hole about Medicare and somehow you've ended up on a government website from 2019 and you're more confused than when you started?

Yeah. I made something so you don't have to do that anymore.

It's called the 5 Things to Check About Your Medicare Before Summer Gets Going and it is exactly what it sounds like. Five things. Plain English. Ten minutes.

No government websites. No confusing charts. No rabbit holes.

Just the stuff that actually matters so you can close all fourteen tabs, put your phone down, and actually enjoy your summer like you deserve to!

It's completely free.

Quick exercise. Without getting up, do you know where your Medicare insurance card is right now?

Now harder question. Do you know the member services number for your specific plan?

Not 1-800-MEDICARE. That's the federal Medicare helpline and while it's useful, it can't actually pull up your specific plan details, tell you if your doctor is in network, or help you figure out why a claim was denied.

The number you need is the one on the back of your actual plan's card. Your Medicare Advantage card. Your Part D drug plan card. Your Medicare supplement card. Whatever coverage you have on top of Original Medicare, that plan has its own member services line and that is the number that can actually help you in the moment.

Here's why this matters so much.

When something goes wrong (and hopefully it never does), you are already stressed. You are not in the mood to dig through a drawer looking for a card or spend twenty minutes on the wrong hold line before realizing you called the wrong number.

So here's what I want you to do right now.

Find your insurance card. Flip it over. Put that member services number in your phone contacts right now. Label it something obvious like "[Plan Name] Insurance" so you can find it fast.

Takes two minutes. Could save you a really awful moment later!

Not sure which card is which or what coverage you even have? That is such a common thing and I am so happy to help sort it out.

Let’s be honest for a second… Medicare can make perfectly intelligent people do some very questionable things. 😂

How many of these have you done?

⬜ Googled Medicare at midnight
⬜ Got advice from a neighbor who “knows somebody”
⬜ Said “I think I’m covered” without actually being sure
⬜ Called the 1-800 number and gave up after sitting on hold forever
⬜ Forgot where you put your insurance card
⬜ Asked your adult kid for help and instantly regretted it
⬜ Felt stressed about Medicare before you even needed to

Truthfully? Most people feel overwhelmed at some point. There’s so much information out there and a lot of it sounds completely different depending on who you ask.

That’s why having someone you trust to walk you through it matters.

How many boxes would you check? 👀

Or better yet… tag the person who would absolutely check off at least three of these. 😂

Let me introduce you to two words that have caused more frustration in American healthcare than almost anything else.

Prior authorization.

Here's what it means in plain English.

Your doctor examines you. Decides you need a specific medication or procedure. Writes it up. And then your insurance plan says — actually, before we cover that, we need you to prove it's necessary.

Your doctor. Who went to medical school. Who just examined you. Now has to stop what they're doing, fill out paperwork, and formally ask your insurance company for permission.

Sometimes it gets approved the same day. Sometimes it takes a week. Sometimes it gets denied and your doctor has to appeal the decision. Meanwhile you are just sitting there trying to get the care you were told you needed!

The official reason prior authorization exists is to control costs and make sure treatments are medically necessary. And look, in theory that makes sense.

In practice it often just feels like a waiting room inside a waiting room.

Here's what you need to know as a Medicare beneficiary. Prior authorization requirements vary by plan. Medicare Advantage plans use it more than Original Medicare. And certain medications, procedures, and specialist visits are more likely to require it than others.

If you've ever been told your medication needs prior authorization and had absolutely no idea what that meant, now you know. And if you're ever stuck in that process, call me before you spend three hours on hold with your insurance company!

DM me the word SUMMER and let's figure it out together.

Has prior authorization ever held up your care or your medication?

I want to tell you about a conversation I have more than I'd like.

Someone calls me in the middle of summer. Maybe they're traveling. Maybe they just got back from the doctor. And they've just found out something about their coverage that they really wish they had known sooner.

Their doctor left their network. Their medication moved to a higher tier. Their plan works differently outside their area than they thought.

None of it is their fault. They just didn't know what to check. And nobody walked them through it.
That's exactly why I made this checklist.

The 5 Things to Check About Your Medicare Before Summer Gets Going takes about ten minutes to go through. It covers the stuff that actually catches people off guard this time of year. And when you're done you'll know exactly where you stand.

No jargon. No confusing insurance speak. Just five clear things that are genuinely worth knowing right now.

It's completely free and I want everyone to have it!
