Don’t forget to include pets in your home fire safety plan!
Pet-proof
âš« Pet-proof stove k***s
âš« Secure loose electrical cords
âš« Install monitored smoke detectors
âš« Train your pets out of risky habits, such as cord-chewing
âš« Enjoy candles? Consider the flameless, battery-operated variety
âš« If you have a fireplace, create a pet-free zone around it - including a fire screen
Prepare a safe escape
⚫ Have a “go bag” - food, medicine, leash, carrier, medical records and a picture of your pet
âš« Train your pets to respond to their name
âš« Practice escape routes with them
âš« Familiarize your pet with the sound of a smoke alarm
âš« Consider training them to go to an established place on command
âš« ID tags or chips can help ensure you and your pets are quickly reunited if separated
Protect them when you’re away
⚫ When you’re away, consider securing your pet (especially mischievous ones) in a safe area near an entrance so they’re easier to rescue if needed
⚫ Display a “rescue our pets” window cling for first responders
âš« When you leave, disable space heaters and other potential ignition sources
Take care of yourself
⚫ If you can’t quickly and safely rescue your pets, evacuate yourself and the rest of your household
âš« If you must escape without your pet, leave the doors open, call their name repeatedly and let firefighters take over the rescue once they arrive
âš« Never go back into a burning house
The joy and love between a pet and their guardian is special. By following these tips, you can help return that love by keeping your pets safe from the dangers of fire.
