Let's hope this storm doesn't steer our way, but if it does here is a list of almost every insurance company's claims phone number. Here's what you need to know if worst comes to worst.
1) File your claim first. Some carriers have managed repair programs where your coverage can be effected if you don't use preferred vendors. Its somewhat rare, but as a rule of thumb, open your claim before signing contracts with contractors.
2) Document EVERYTHING. Take pictures before, during, after. You need to be able to prove you had damage if you are having repairs done before an adjuster can get on site.
3) If you have replacement cost coverage, understand that the insurance companies will pay out the depreciated amount first, and depending on the insurance company you are with, you will need to turn in either a signed contract or an invoice from the contractor to get paid out the full amount, or the actual cost to repair or replace.
I hope you and your family are taking precautions and watching this storm closely. If it steers our way tomorrow, I would recommend getting inland or over to the East Coast. Stay safe out there! We've survived this before and we can do it again!
If you have an insurance claim, this is where you will find the contact number for your policy carrier.
