For decades we've asked: "Are our Service Members ready to accomplish today's mission?"

It's an important question. But maybe it's incomplete.

What if we also asked:

Are they ready to navigate the rest of their lives? Because every Service Member will eventually face decisions that have nothing to do with combat.

Buying a home.
Choosing where to live.
Understanding healthcare.
Planning financially.
Raising a family.
Starting a business.
Transitioning into a new career.
Finding purpose after military service.

None of those challenges begin on the day someone retires. They begin years earlier.

Maybe readiness shouldn't end when military service does. Maybe...

It should last a lifetime.

The military measures almost everything:

Weapons qualification.
Physical fitness.
Medical readiness.
Maintenance.
Training.
Deployments.
Personnel accountability.

Because what gets measured...Gets improved.

But here's a question: How do we measure whether a young Staff Sergeant understands the VA Home Loan? Or whether a Captain knows how to maximize the GI Bill for their children? Or whether a retiring First Sergeant understands the value of a pension, TSP, VA disability compensation, and state benefits working together? Or whether a military spouse knows what resources are available before a crisis occurs?

Most of those things aren't measured. Yet they influence some of the biggest decisions our people will ever make.

Maybe readiness isn't missing. Maybe we're simply measuring the wrong things.

Every commander can recognize a readiness problem they can see.

Failed PT tests.
Missed appointments.
Disciplinary issues.
Medical profiles.
Training deficiencies.

But what about the problems that never appear on a readiness report?

Financial stress.
Benefit confusion.
Family uncertainty.
Fear of transition.
Identity loss.

Questions nobody feels comfortable asking. Those invisible burdens rarely stay invisible.
Eventually...They affect performance.

Leadership. Retention. Relationships. Sometimes even lives.

These aren't simply personal problems. They're readiness problems.

And by the time they're visible...We're already behind.
Maybe readiness begins long before the warning signs appear.

We have spent generations building the world's greatest fighting force.

No nation prepares its military better. We develop leaders. We build disciplined teams. We train for uncertainty. We prepare our people to fight and win our Nation's wars. Yet one question continues to bother me:

What are we preparing them for after the mission ends?

Because while military service eventually comes to an end for every Service Member...

Life does not.

The biggest decisions many will ever make aren't made on deployment.

They're made before or after. Buying a home. Raising a family. Understanding earned benefits. Planning financially. Building a second career. Finding purpose beyond the uniform.

None of those decisions are side issues. They affect readiness long before someone hangs up the uniform.

Maybe...We've been defining readiness too narrowly.

Teach them.
Hire them.
Mentor them.
Educate them.
Introduce them.
Connect them.

Help them buy a home. Help them understand their benefits. Help them build wealth. Help them launch businesses. Help them transition.

Last Wednesday…

We stood in front of a room at MEDCoE on Joint Base San Antonio–Fort Sam Houston.

Service Members. Veterans. Families. Government Civilians.

One conversation. One mission.
