COST DOESN’T NEED TO BE A BARRIER TO STAYING ACTIVE.

Seniors exercising outdoors Choosing to be physically active at any age can be a positive choice for your overall health. However, some people hold back because of limited access to exercise facilities or expensive equipment. The experts at the National Institute on Aging point out that you shouldn’t let cost get in the way of getting the physical activity you need. That’s because there are many free or inexpensive options. First, taking a walk at your own pace is an accessible activity for many people. If you’re concerned about air quality or bad weather while walking outside, you can walk in a mall, large retail store, or community center. Next, try free online exercise videos. You can also use items you already have at home (such as detergent jugs or books) to strengthen your muscles. Lastly, turn on your favorite music and dance! As long as you’re being safe, you can try different low- or no-cost ways to be as physically active as your abilities allow. If you’re unsure about what will work for you, talk to your doctor about which activities are approved for your personal abilities and goals.

FEBRUARY IS AMERICAN HEART MONTH.
February is American Heart Month American Heart Month has been commemorated each February since 1964. It’s a time when the nation spotlights heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Throughout this month, the American Heart Association aims to raise awareness and support for research efforts to ensure that millions of people live longer and healthier lives. In many cases, heart disease is preventable when people treat high blood pressure, exercise moderately, refrain from smoking, control blood sugar and cholesterol, and get regular physical exams.

LEARN THE MANY REASONS WHY DRINKING WATER MATTERS!
Group of people drinking water on a bench Have you been thinking about some ways you can be healthier in the new year? According to a study from the National Institutes of Health, a great, easy way to boost your health is to drink more water. The study finds that well-hydrated adults have a lower risk of developing chronic diseases and may live longer than people who do not get enough fluids. Drinking water helps prevent dehydration, lubricate your joints, maintain a normal body temperature, regulate blood pressure, and even ease constipation. The National Academy of Medicine recommends that adults over age 50 drink about 91 ounces for women and 125 ounces for men. If you take medications that affect fluid balance, check with your doctor about the optimal amount of water to drink each day.

LIFE INSURANCE CAN BE ABOUT SO MUCH MORE THAN FUNERAL EXPENSES.
Life insurance Yes, covering funeral expenses is among the most popular reasons that people buy life insurance. However, it’s important to know that life insurance can have a myriad of other benefits. Life insurance can help protect your family’s future by replacing income and paying off debts like auto loans, mortgage, and credit cards. It can also fund continuing education for a loved one or be used to provide a legacy for your favorite charity. Plus, life insurance can build cash value over time. For example, every time you make a premium payment on a permanent life insurance policy, part of that amount goes into a cash value account. That account can be accessed during your lifetime, if you need it, through withdrawals or borrowing against it. Bottom line: While covering funeral expenses can certainly be a significant reason to have life insurance, it’s not all there is.

2 teaspoons of olive oil (extra-virgin preferred)
1 small onion, chopped
2 medium garlic cloves, chopped
1 tablespoon of ground coriander, plus ¼ teaspoon of ground coriander
1 pound of carrots, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 cup of fresh orange juice

¼ cup of fat-free sour cream
1 tablespoon of chopped, fresh cilantro

Medicare Supplement Vs Medicare Advantage

Deciding between a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan and a Medicare Advantage plan depends on your priorities for budget, doctor choice, and long-term health needs.

You cannot have both at the same time.

When a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) is Beneficial
Choose this if you prefer predictable costs and total flexibility with providers.

Provider Choice: You can see any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare; no networks or referrals are required.

Predictability: You pay a higher monthly premium but have almost no out-of-pocket costs (like copays or coinsurance) for Medicare-approved services.

Travel: Ideal for those who travel frequently within the U.S. or live in two different states during the year.

Stability: Benefits are standardized and do not change from year to year.

When a Medicare Advantage Plan is Beneficial

Choose this if you want lower monthly premiums and all-in-one coverage.

Cost Savings: Many plans have $0 monthly premiums (beyond your Part B premium).

Extra Perks: Most plans include dental, vision, hearing, and gym memberships (SilverSneakers) that Original Medicare does not cover.

Drug Coverage: Prescription drug coverage (Part D) is usually bundled into the plan.

Integrated Care: Some plans offer specialized care coordination for managing chronic conditions.

Your best time to buy a Medigap policy is during your 6-month Open Enrollment Period (starting when you're 65 and have Part A& B. After this, insurance companies can use "medical underwriting" to deny you coverage or charge higher rates based on your health (NY has no pre-exsisting condition) It is often much harder to switch from an Advantage plan back to a Supplement plan later in life.

2026 Medicare Parts A & B Premiums and Deductibles

2026 Medicare Parts A & B Premiums and Deductibles
2026 Medicare Part D Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amounts

On November 14, 2025, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the 2026 premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance amounts for the Medicare Part A and Part B programs, and the 2026 Medicare Part D income-related monthly adjustment amounts.

Medicare Part A Premium and Deductible

Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital, skilled nursing facility, hospice, inpatient rehabilitation, and some home health care services. Approximately 99% of Medicare beneficiaries do not have a Part A premium since they have at least 40 quarters of Medicare-covered employment, as determined by the Social Security Administration.

The Medicare Part A inpatient hospital deductible that beneficiaries pay if admitted to the hospital will be $1,736 in 2026, an increase of $60 from $1,676 in 2025. Part A inpatient hospital deductible covers beneficiaries’ share of costs for the first 60 days of Medicare-covered inpatient hospital care in a benefit period. In 2026, beneficiaries must pay a coinsurance amount of $434 per day for the 61st through 90th day of a hospitalization ($419 in 2025) in a benefit period and $868 per day for lifetime reserve days ($838 in 2025). For beneficiaries in skilled nursing facilities, the daily coinsurance for days 21 through 100 of extended care services in a benefit period will be $217.00 in 2026 ($209.50 in 2025).

Part A Deductible and Coinsurance Amounts for Calendar Years 2025 and 2026
by Type of Cost Sharing

Inpatient hospital deductible
2025. $1,676
2026. $1,736

Daily hospital coinsurance for 61st-90th day
$419 vs $434
Daily hospital coinsurance for lifetime reserve days
$838 vs $868
Skilled nursing facility daily coinsurance (days 21-100)
$209.50 vs. $217

Enrollees age 65 and older who have fewer than 40 quarters of coverage, and certain persons with disabilities, pay a monthly premium in order to voluntarily enroll in Medicare Part A. Individuals who had at least 30 quarters of coverage, or were married to someone with at least 30 quarters of coverage, may buy into

Part A at a reduced monthly premium rate, which will be $311 in 2026, a $26 increase from 2025. Certain uninsured aged individuals who have fewer than 30 quarters of coverage, and certain individuals with disabilities who have exhausted other entitlements, will pay the full premium, which will be $565 a month in 2026, a $47 increase from 2025.

Medicare Part B Premium and Deductible

Medicare Part B covers physicians’ services, outpatient hospital services, certain home health services, durable medical equipment, and certain other medical and health services not covered by Medicare Part A.

Each year, the Medicare Part B premium, deductible, and coinsurance rates are determined according to provisions of the Social Security Act. The standard monthly premium for Medicare Part B enrollees will be $202.90 for 2026, an increase of $17.90 from $185.00 in 2025. The annual deductible for all Medicare Part B beneficiaries will be $283 in 2026, an increase of $26 from the annual deductible of $257 in 2025.

The increase in the 2026 Part B standard premium and deductible is mainly due to projected price changes and assumed utilization increases that are consistent with historical experience. If the Trump Administration had not taken action to address unprecedented spending on skin substitutes, the Part B premium increase would have been about $11 more a month. However, due to changes finalized in the 2026 Physician Fee Schedule Final Rule, spending on skin substitutes is expected to drop by 90% without affecting patient care.

Beginning in 2023, individuals whose full Medicare coverage ended 36 months after a kidney transplant, and who do not have certain other types of insurance coverage, can elect to continue Part B coverage of immunosuppressive drugs by paying a premium. For 2026, the standard immunosuppressive drug premium is $121.60.

Medicare Part B Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amounts

Since 2007, a beneficiary’s Part B monthly premium has been based on his or her income. These income-related monthly adjustment amounts affect roughly 8% of people with Medicare Part B. The 2026 Part B total premiums for high-income beneficiaries with full Part B coverage are shown in the following table

Medicare news updates
Drug price negotiation: The administration announced that the second round of negotiated drug prices, covering 15 drugs including Ozempic and Wegovy, will take effect in 2027. The White House also stated that President Trump has reached a deal to lower the cost of certain weight-loss drugs to a price much lower than what the Biden administration had proposed.

Telehealth flexibility: The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has temporarily extended certain telehealth benefits for Medicare Advantage plans through December 31, 2025, or until Congress acts, to ensure continuity of care following a government shutdown.

Agency leadership: Dr. Mehmet Oz has been appointed to lead the agency responsible for Medicare and Medicaid.
2026 plans: CMS has announced that Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are expected to remain stable in 2026, though some insurers are reportedly reducing the number of plans they offer.

Eligibility: Medicare has expanded eligibility for cochlear implants, allowing more older adults to receive the devices. However, some low-income retirees have lost an easier path to assistance with rising healthcare costs, due to a budget bill that suspended an effort to enroll more of them in assistance programs.
