Seriously, some people are so judgmental. By the way, this is coming from an INFJ Myers-Briggs personality type. The J literally means judgmental. But I'm still gonna call the haters out! Sketchbooks should be this, sketchbooks should be that... it's none of anyone's business how a person decides to use their sketchbook, or art journal, or book full of art crap....

I haven't been sleeping great, which means I haven't been getting up early like usual. I woke up the other morning and thought, "hmmm, I think I want to make a collage still life with a blue vase"... so I did! I have a decent stash of gel plate prints so I decided to put them to use. I grabbed 10-12 pages in a few colors and got started! The goal was to create a collage piece that I could put in Downtown Bangor's Free Art Exchange box found at the Bangor Public Library....

I was contacted to paint a pet portrait of a sweet ginger kitty, Sunny, that recently passed away. I jumped on the chance because his mama, Karen, is my Mom's cousin and she has been very supportive of me in my art journey over the years. I have a loved one that is turning a whopping 90 years old this month! Wowza! He is an avid gardener and LOVES tomatoes and peas. He grows other things, too, but boy he takes pride in his tomatoes! So, of course, painting a birthday card with tomatoes makes complete sense! I didn't want to use watercolor or gouache. I swatched some watercolor pencils and I just didn't see the vibrant red that I wanted to match these lovely tomatoes....

I really enjoy using black watercolor paper with gouache… but do I really need it? Can I use a black underpainting on my favorite Arches watercolor paper and get similar results?
