A new free grocery market is opening inside the Fairmount Heights Public Library in Prince George’s County to help address food insecurity in the community. The Fairmount Five Market, launching on World Hunger Day, will allow eligible residents to shop for groceries at no cost in a familiar, accessible location.

The market is set to open on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. and is designed to serve about 175 families, or roughly 350 people, each week. Officials say it offers a more dignified alternative to traditional food pantries by allowing residents to choose their own groceries.

Funded by a $200,000 grant and operated in partnership with Goodr, the initiative will provide staples such as bread, cereal, canned goods, and other essentials. Local leaders say it will help improve food access in an area where many residents live in or near food deserts and face limited grocery options.

Community members say the market could be especially helpful for seniors and families on fixed incomes who struggle with rising food costs and limited nearby stores.
