Tiny bookkeeping tip:

Not every deposit is income.

I know it feels like money coming in should automatically count as money earned, but bookkeeping is a little more annoying than that.

A deposit could be sales income.

It could also be a transfer from another account, a loan, an owner contribution, a reimbursement, or money collected for something that does not actually belong in income.

That difference matters because your reports are only helpful if the money is showing up in the right place.

So before every deposit gets tossed into “sales,” it is worth asking:

What is this money actually for?

That one question can make your reports a lot more accurate.

The charge on your bank statement usually does not tell the whole story.

It may say “Amazon,” but that could mean office supplies, shipping materials, equipment, subscriptions, personal items, or some mystery combination of all of the above.

A quick habit that helps:

Save the receipt or order details when you buy something for the business.

It is not just about getting transactions entered.

Where they go matters, too.

Meals, software, supplies, contractors, advertising, subscriptions, owner draws — they all tell a different story about your business.

And when everything gets shoved into the wrong place, your reports stop being useful.

You do not need to obsess over every tiny detail.

But your categories should make enough sense that you can look at your numbers and actually understand what is happening.

But they do need to make sense.

You should be able to look at your numbers and have at least a general idea of what is happening in your business:

Are you making money?
Are expenses creeping up?
Are you able to hire someone and grow more?
Are you ready for taxes — or hoping future-you figures it out?

Bookkeeping is not just about keeping things tidy.

It is about giving yourself information you can actually use.

Because running a business is hard enough without guessing.

This is your gentle reminder: 🌿

If your bookkeeping has been sitting in the “I’ll deal with it later” pile, it might be time to stop letting it quietly stress you out.

You do not have to untangle it all at once.

And you do not have to do it alone.

Sometimes the best first step is just figuring out:

-What accounts need to be connected
-What months are missing
-Which transactions need answers
-What reports you actually need

Messy books can be cleaned up.
