Here are some tips to avoid getting pulled over by police while driving:
Obey speed limits, road signs, and traffic laws, and adjust your speed based on road conditions. Slow down near schools and in residential neighborhoods, especially during the school day. Use your turn signals to communicate your intentions to other drivers and police officers. Keep your vehicle well-maintained and ensure all lights are working properly. You can also use apps to warn you of speed cameras.
Avoid illegal cell phone use. You know, use common sense.

IF THE POLICE COME TO YOUR HOME
• You do not have to let police officers inside your home unless they have a warrant (this includes porches,
decks, and garages). You may step outside of your home and close the door while talking to them.
• If they have a warrant, ask them to show it to you. Officers can only search the areas and for the items
listed on the warrant. An arrest warrant allows police to enter the home of the person listed on the
warrant if they believe the person is inside.
• Police can no longer use the smell of ma*****na to enter your home without a warrant.
• Even if officers have a warrant, you may remain silent.

An officer can only arrest a person if:

The officer sees the person commit a crime. The officer has probable cause (reason to believe) that the person has committed a felony (any crime punishable by state prison), or a judge or magistrate has issued an arrest warrant, supported by probable cause.
Even if you think the officer or judge has made a mistake regarding any of the above, resisting or arguing is NOT in your best interests. It could lead to criminal charges or bodily harm.

If You're Stopped By The Police
In Louisiana, you can be arrested for refusing to give your name and address to police officers if they stop you and they reasonably suspect you are involved in a crime.
Keep your hands where police can see them.
Ask if you're free to leave. Detainment must be temporary and for a reasonable period of time if not under arrest (approximately 20-30 minutes).
While conducting a stop, police may perform a pat down for officers' safety. However, officer cannot go in your pockets unless they feel something similar to a weapon.
Ask if you're under arrest. If you're under arrest, tell the officer you wish to remain silent.
You do not have to consent to a search of yourself, your phone, or your belongings.

Tip of the day! What not to say when arrested?
DON'T give explanations, excuses, or stories. Say “I want to remain silent” and “I want to talk to a lawyer.” DON'T talk about your case on the phone. The police might be recording your phone calls (except those to your lawyer).
