Growing up in a ranch family with two expensive type 1 diabetics, healthcare was never just “a medical issue.” My aunt and I both have type 1 diabetes, and before diabetes care became what it is today, there were emergency flights, hospital stays, expensive medications, travel for care, and major costs insurance didn’t fully cover.
On farms & ranches, healthcare costs don’t just affect your personal finances — they affect the operation itself. If too much money is going toward premiums, copays, medications, deductibles, or medical bills, that directly limits what a farm or ranch can reinvest back into the operation.
It determines whether you can:
• purchase hay & fertilizer
• replace equipment
• maintain positive cash flow
As I got older and started interviewing farmers and ranchers across the U.S. through my MBA program, I realized our family wasn’t unique. I kept hearing stories about rising healthcare costs, confusing insurance options, and rural families struggling to protect the operations they’ve spent generations building.
One rancher told me:
“A lot of people in agriculture are dropping insurance because they simply can’t afford it.”
That problem is why I started Old Western Insurance.
