We've entered another phase in the U.S.-Canada tariff saga.

President Trump imposed 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian exports, and Canada announced counter-tariffs on an equivalent amount of U.S. goods, set to take effect September 8.

Canada could add an energy surcharge to electricity exports, which could have a greater impact on the Northeast. Neither country benefits if this standoff continues, and long-term negotiations break down.

This week's Milestone Minute also covers:

• FinCEN's repeal of beneficial ownership reporting requirements for companies formed in the U.S.

• A new virtual discussion group addressing the emotional challenges of shifting from saving to spending in retirement

At the beginning of August, our team had the chance to participate in Gear Up School, an event hosted by the Hooksett Rotary Club that fills backpacks with school supplies for kids across the community.

Because of events like this, hundreds of students are able to start the school year with the supplies they need.

Thank you to SNHU for hosting and to the Hooksett Rotary Club for putting this together. We can't wait to come back next year!

There are more uses than you may think for leftover 529 funds.

Whether it's scholarships, a transfer, or a different path altogether, leftover 529 funds are common, and there are ways to put that money to good use without unnecessary taxes.

Our latest blog covers:

• Using the account for your own education

• Naming a new beneficiary, like another child or grandchild

• Covering room and board, tech, K-12 tuition, or trade school costs

• Paying down student loans

• Rolling funds into a Roth IRA or ABLE account

A 529 plan can keep working for your family well past graduation day, as long as you know where to direct it.

Our team had a wonderful time at the Farley White customer appreciation event last week!

Getting out of the office is always a treat, especially with beautiful weather, great food, fun games, giveaways to be won, and the chance to dunk our own Jon Harrington. The most rewarding piece of the day, however, was knowing that all proceeds from the event went directly to the New Hampshire Food Bank.

We're grateful for companies like Farley White who make it easy to combine connection with community impact, and proud to support an organization that drives change in our community.

Strong financial planning is often about the details. Overlooked items such as beneficiary designations, tax considerations, and risk exposures can have lasting consequences. A thorough review can help uncover issues before they become costly mistakes.

Recent IRS updates to contribution rules may change the way you approach 530A accounts.

New proposed regulations address employer contributions to 530A accounts and the use of Section 125 plans for contributions to a dependent’s account. For employers that choose to offer this benefit, the new rules could provide another way for families to contribute to these accounts on a tax-advantaged basis.

This week's Milestone Minute also covers:

• The Saver’s Match, which will replace the Saver’s Credit with a match of up to 50% on eligible retirement contributions beginning in 2027

• U.S. debt tops $40 trillion and what rising debt could mean for Treasury yields

• A recap of our team's recent volunteer work with Gear Up for School, helping local kids start the school year prepared
