Thinking About Buying a Home? Here’s What to Know About “Buy Now, Pay Later” Debts!

Are you using services like Klarna or Affirm to split up your purchases? These “buy now, pay later” plans are popular, but did you know they can affect your ability to qualify for a mortgage—even if they don’t show up on your credit report?

Here’s what matters:

- How Lenders View These Debts: When you apply for a home loan, lenders look at your bank statements for any ongoing installment payments, including Klarna, Affirm, and similar plans.
- The 10-Payment Rule: If you have less than 10 payments remaining on these debts, they usually won’t be counted against you. But if you have more than 10 payments left—or if you’re making large monthly payments—these could impact your debt-to-income ratio and your ability to qualify.
- Be Ready: Before you start your mortgage application, take a look at your statements and total up any ongoing “buy now, pay later” payments. It’s smart to get clear on this ahead of time.
- No Surprises: Don’t be caught off guard if your lender asks for documentation about these payments. Being upfront helps avoid delays!
