Can I be honest about something I hear pretty often?

A contractor finishes a busy May, lots of jobs, crew working, invoices out — and then sits down in mid-July and realizes the month didn't actually go the way they thought. Materials cost more than expected. A job ran long. The numbers just didn't land where they should have.

Same thing happens with vacation rental hosts. Great occupancy in June, guests happy, calendar full — and then August rolls around and there's a vague sense that it should have been more profitable than it was.

And landlords too. Rent came in, expenses went out — but where did it all actually go?

This is one of the most common things I see. And it almost always comes down to the same thing: the books aren't being kept current, so there's no real-time picture of how the business is performing.

When your books are reconciled monthly, you know how June went in June — not in August. That changes everything about how you make decisions.

Does this one hit close to home? Drop a comment — I think a lot of business owners feel this way and don't talk about it.

June hits fast in Maine.

One week you're wrapping up spring projects. The next you've got three jobs running at once, a crew to manage, materials to order, and invoices piling up on the seat of your truck.

Bookkeeping? It moves to the back burner. Every time.

The problem is that by October — when things slow down and you finally have time to look at the numbers — you're three months behind and heading into the off-season without a clear picture of what the summer actually earned you.

I work with Maine contractors to keep books current through the busy season, not just cleaned up after it. Monthly reconciliation, clean expense tracking, and a clear profit picture — even when you're too busy to think about it.

If summer is already feeling full, now is a good time to talk.

Free consultation, no pressure.

Quick question for Maine contractors: which job last year was actually your most profitable?

Not the biggest. Not the busiest. The most profitable — where the gap between what you charged and what it cost you was widest.

If you can't answer that confidently, you're not alone. Most contractors price on experience and gut feel, stay busy all season, and hope the numbers work out.

Job costing changes that. It tells you exactly what every project earned, what it cost, and where your estimates went wrong — so you can bid smarter and make more money on every job.

Our latest blog post walks through exactly how to set it up in QuickBooks Online.

Most Maine contractors don't know which jobs are actually profitable. Job costing in QuickBooks Online changes that — here's how to set it up and what you'll learn when you do.

Your bookkeeper can actually be one of your best referral sources — we know a lot of business owners

I want to let you in on something that took me a little while to realize about networking.

When I first started going to events I was focused on meeting potential clients — which makes sense, right? But some of the most valuable connections I've made have been with other service providers. Accountants, financial advisors, insurance agents, contractors — people who work with the same kinds of business owners I do.

Here's what I've learned: when you genuinely get to know people and care about their success, referrals happen naturally in every direction. As a bookkeeper I get a pretty unique window into the businesses I work with — I know when someone is growing and needs help or looking for a service I can't provide but someone I trust can. Being well connected means, I can actually serve my clients better, not just my own business.

And when someone in my network needs a bookkeeper, they think of me. It really just comes down to people taking care of people — and that's the part of networking I didn't expect to love as much as I do.

Who has sent you an unexpected referral that made your day? I'd love to hear about it. 😊

Memorial Day is here — which means for most Maine service businesses, it's go time.

Landscaping crews are full. Contractors are booked out for weeks. Cleaning schedules are packed. It's the best time of year for business.

It's also when bookkeeping quietly falls apart.

Not because you don't care. Because you're running a business, not sitting at a desk. And when it comes down to a job or your books — the job wins every time.

That's exactly why I'm here.

I work remotely with service businesses all across Maine to keep their books current through the busy season — not just cleaned up after it. Monthly reconciliation, clean reports, and a clear picture of where your money actually stands.

You handle the work. I'll handle the numbers.

Ready to hand the books off to someone who actually likes doing them?

Following up after meeting someone is where most networking falls apart

Can I be honest about something? Following up after a networking event is where I used to fall apart completely. I still do...

You have a great conversation, exchange cards, walk away feeling good about the connection — and then life gets busy and you never reach out. Sound familiar?

The follow up is actually where the relationship begins. That first conversation is just the introduction. A simple message a day or two later saying "it was great to meet you, I'd love to stay connected" goes a long way. It doesn't have to be polished or perfect, it just has to happen.

I've been making a point of following up after every event and it has made a real difference in the connections that have actually grown into something meaningful. It feels awkward at first but honestly it’s getting easier — kind of like showing up to the event in the first place.

What's your follow up game like? Do you reach out after meeting someone or does it fall through the cracks? Drop a comment below — no judgment here! 😄
