Closing accounts won’t improve your credit score. It will lower your score by limiting your total available credit and calculates your debt owed to appear higher. It also decreases your credit’s age and gives it a young appearance based on the FICO model. The banks like to see age on accounts because of proof of payment history.

Keep the cards active by having a fixed bill debited from your card at the end of the month to avoid the bank/creditor from closing your account due to non usage of the account. Most banks will close inactive accounts after 18 months of no account activity.
