What happened to mortgage rates this week? October 19-23, 2026
Rates started the week near their yearly highs and ended it with the first real relief in two months. The average 30-year fixed fell to 7.32% (Freddie Mac, October 22), its first weekly drop since August, after Thursday's bond-market rally, the biggest one-day move of its kind since March 2023.
Bottom line: Rates finally caught a breather after climbing since August, but they are still more than a point above last year.
