The Voice of Innocence

The Voice of Innocence Fight for innocents wrongfully convicted re: Monfils Case. Create awareness. Encourage action. Be the Voice. tweet ...

Enough lives are already impacted by the crimes. The fact that even more innocent lives are stolen by wrongful prosecutions, mistaken identities and guilty verdicts brought on by misleading information ... well, these occurrences are devastating to many more lives within our communities. Founded by Joan Treppa and Joan Van Houten, The Voice of Innocence is dedicated to lending a voice to those who

have been left in a cage of silence - those who have been stripped of their families, their homes, their lives - until they are freed and are given back a voice of their own. Here, we will share their stories, follow their struggles and live their disappointments and their victories. Awareness is they key to bringing truth to light. Vigilance is the road that leads us there. Thank you for joining us here.

Their assistance put us on a path to fruitful opportunities! Since then, I have thanked them through donations.

“The front desk was vacant when Johnny and I entered the office. We peeked down the hallway as someone walked by. A young woman, an intern, acknowledged us. “We’re here to see Erika,” I said. The woman nodded and disappeared down the hall. Erika, [the current executive director for the then Minnesota Innocence Project], soon emerged. Her face lit up when she saw us. “Come on back.” We entered her office, and after introducing ourselves, she asked about the Monfils case. We shared most of the case details, our frustrations about the book signings, and the failed search for legal assistance. Erika, was sympathetic but explained upfront how understaffed and backlogged with cases their office was, which prevented them from helping us. Still, it was a relief to share our woes with someone who understood our predicament.
[Legal Director], Julie Jonas, took a quick break to say hello. It was great to finally meet her in person. Fascinated with the legalities of the case, she reluctantly returned to work before hearing all that we had to share. However, as she walked away, she mentioned an upcoming gala called a Benefit for Innocence. “You both should think about coming. Maybe you will meet an attorney who can help.” Erika filled us in on the details, describing it as an annual event typically scheduled for the fall. “Hundreds of guests, including attorneys, judges, media personalities, and exonerees, will be in attendance. An event page will be up on our website soon.” We thanked Erika for her time and left with a sense of hope and eagerness about this new adventure.” – Excerpt from Reclaiming Lives

Each time this case resurfaces, those involved on both sides relive the horrors all over again. Many people empathize with the Monfils family and favor shielding them from further trauma. But few acknowledge the real and unrelenting trauma also experienced by the six men and those who love them. In my opinion, all of these publications are written in an effort to set the record straight in this case. They are long overdue and have always been inevitable because of the many untruths that still linger in this case. Until an honest dialogue and full disclosure of all circumstances related to this case take place, this tragedy will continue to reemerge, and the pain associated with it will never fully disappear. Truth must prevail for Tom Monfils and his family. It must also prevail for the six men and their families. I strongly believe the potential to achieve both does exist. -- Excerpt from Reclaiming Lives

Check it out guys! Another book about the Monfils case has been published this month! This one was penned by a retired Corrections Officer who met Rey Moore and Dale Basten during his time as a Corrections Officer at Green Bay Correctional Institution (GBCI). Joe was generous enough to send a copy of his book to me and I just finished reading it. I like his version and learned things I didn't know. The book compliments our efforts and confirms similar sentiments; that the six men are innocent. Still, it's a different take on the case and gives readers a more in-depth look at what really happened leading up to Tom Monfils' death.
