Updated 2025 Social Security Cost Of Living Increase estimation

There's a big Social Security change that happens year after year. Social Security benefits are eligible for annual cost-of-living adjustments, or COLAs. The purpose of these raises is to help recipients maintain their buying power as inflation pushes the cost of living upward.

Medicare Advantage plans reported significantly higher medical costs and utilization in 2023. Mostly coming from:

outpatient surgeries
ER visits
General outpatient visits

"Most plans pointed to increased numbers of musculoskeletal, circulatory system, and respiratory system surgeries as the main drivers of higher utilization."

Could mean a reduction in benefits for future Medicare Advantage plans.

And we’re already seeing higher than usual Medicare Supplement premium increases for these same reasons.

Social Security “COLA” increase is estimated to be 2.6% for 2025. That’s lower than the 3.2% increase for this year and much lower than the 8.7% increase in 2023. This is currently just an estimate the Social Security administration won’t finalize this number until later this year.

Retirees are in for unpleasant surprise: Despite hotter inflation in March, Social Security benefits might get a smaller cost-of-living adjustment next year.
