My little guy spent much of Wednesday night in the hospital. He's home and okay. Spent the day with me yesterday.

Over the past 24+ hours, want to know how much time I spent worried about work?

Less than 2 minutes.

I sent off a quick email to my team when we settled into a hospital room. That was it.

I had complete trust in them to have my back and they did. From managing my calendar and rescheduling meetings, to making calls they otherwise wouldn't have, to sending thoughts & prayers.

Our clients got AFG's full attention, and I got to keep mine with my family. Not multitask. Just be mom.

You hear the term culture thrown around a lot.

I'd put ours up against anyone's. That's worth something.

Waking up grateful to be headed back to work with this awesome team today.

In my line of work, with the intimate conversations we have with clients, we often see the truth of the ancient proverb:

"A healthy person has a thousand wishes, but a sick person has only one."

Heart health is critically important. Cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of women.

Proudly embracing National Wear Red Day.

Let's keep all our wishes in tact. ❤️

We were watching college basketball tonight.

A player was fouled and fell to the ground. The broadcast showed several replays and the analysts contemplated whether it was a Flagrant foul.

I followed. My eyes went to where their voices directed. I was making my own judgment as to the call.

Then my 4-year-old spoke up.

"Nobody helped him up."

"What's that bud?"

"Nobody helped him up," he repeated.

He was right. All eyes were on the refs, the players' arms in the air.

And my little guy noticed.

That doesn't fly on really good teams.

I know a lot of great coaches who would have seen that on film and corrected it immediately.

Luca isn't a coach. He doesn't even play team sports yet, so I'm not sure where he learned the lesson.

But through his eyes, basic human decency, teamwork, sportsmanship, whatever you want to call it - it trumped the call on the court.

Maybe that shouldn't surprise me as much as it did.

My kids climbed their first mountain on Monday. Their little legs climbed over 1,300 ft in elevation, 3.6 miles round trip. It was amazing!

Not surprisingly, I found myself coaching them through our adventure.
Physically, of course (drink water, pay attention to where you put your feet, etc).
Even more so mentally.
The kind of mindset work that I've needed to rely on.

🔷 Psyching them up on the way to the mountain. "We can do hard things, especially when we do them together!"

🔷 Overcoming challenges throughout the hike. "Let's focus on how good we'll feel when we make it to the top!" (instead of how much our legs hurt)

🔷 Celebrating at the summit. "Look at where you are! You're at the top of a mountain. YOU did this!"

🔷 Reflecting at the bottom. "How are you guys feeling about what you just accomplished?"

Let's be perfectly clear. The four-hour hike wasn't stress-free. There was whining, some minor falls, a little bickering, flares of impatience. But it was SO worth it. Mostly, they were troopers. Lovely, wide-eyed, curious hiking companions. There were a whole bunch of moments worthy of mental snapshots. These two are my absolute favorite:

💚 My son's face when we made it to the top. A mix of thrill, awe, satisfaction. And in his little 4-year-old voice he said on repeat, "Mama, I'm just so impressed!" (He was obsessed with the view of Lake George. And also terrified me when he said next time he was going to jump off the mountain into that water. We obviously had a nice long chat about why that can't happen lol.)

💚 My daughter as we neared the end. Slight shock and amusement in her voice when she almost chuckled, "Mama, I'm so proud of myself." Baby girl, I'm proud of you too.

My heart.

This day will stick with me.

Doing hard things is 100% worth it.

For more than a decade, every Thanksgiving and Christmas has started off the same way. With a text message from Rich Becker to a group of 14+ of us. Our FOX23 Sports team. A team that started well before I joined.

The messages are different, often with a similar sentiment - that our team was special. Gratitude for the opportunity we all had to work together. For the hard work & hustle, dedication & commitment that went into making our shows top notch.

The funny part about those messages is that for more than a decade, I had only ever known a handful of those people. I had heard names and stories of many others, but when they responded it the group chat, only numbers accompanied their messages... until this past weekend.

Our team - specifically the FOX23 High School Sports Show - was inducted into the Capital Region Football Hall of Fame on Saturday. The show that lived up to the tagline "No one brings you closer to the game" was recognized for changing local media and being a must-watch staple of Friday and Saturday nights.

Rich's speech hit all the right notes - of teamwork, grit, and a shared belief. And what he may have been too humble to admit, is that his leadership and the culture created under that leadership, was a huge reason why we were so successful. It's also why so many of the FOX23 folks I met this weekend already felt like friends (siblings even!)

I often look back at those days as some of my favorite in the news biz. It was awesome getting the gang back together to celebrate our joint accomplishments. And come Thanksgiving when the texts start flowing, so too will appreciation of feeling even closer to this amazing group. Love this team!

Congratulations, friends!

Imagine you're at work, in the 3rd of 13 meetings for the day.
In each meeting there's money on the line, both for you, the company, and your bosses.
You felt really good about this meeting going in.
Then things went sideways, and the $110k pay day for the company turned into $40k.
Your compensation dropped from $11k to $4k.
Your next meeting is right away, and you have very little time to prep.
Yet, there's a little kid that wants to take a picture with you.
There are a few others who want your autograph.
What do you do?

This is the true story of Eclipse Award winning jockey Flavien Prat after the G2 Saratoga Special on Saturday.

What did he do?

He stopped. He high fived. He took the picture, smiling. He signed the autographs.

He didn't have to, but he did.

Even-tempered. Grounded. He didn't dwell on the last race, riding a previously unbeaten horse to its first second-place finish. He stayed present. Kind. Generous.

He went on to win 3 more races (4 total) that afternoon, including the G1 Whitney Stakes. He added 3 seconds, 3 fourths. He secured himself over $95k.

And he made at least one little boy's day. My son's.

You don't have to be gracious to be successful, but it certainly doesn't hurt.

In news, deadlines are sacred.

Since I’ve been removed for the last few years, maybe I’ll get a pass.

My dear friend and former colleague Trishna Begam signed off her last newscast on Monday.

Those who tuned in for the past decade know her as an award-winning storyteller. Those keen enough to pay attention may also have picked up on her love of science, of journalism, of nature, of her family, of her colleagues, of her community.

What I can tell you from “behind the scenes” is she’s as authentic as it gets. An open ear. Willing to help. Hardworking. What you often hear in business as “a good culture fit.” But she wasn’t just a “fit”. She’s one of the drivers of the close-knit, familial environment we had at News10.

Trishna and I were pregnant at the same time. Became mothers. Swapped stories and suggestions.

We talked through major loss. Sometimes we didn’t talk and stood supportively together in silence. Mostly as we did our hair or makeup in the dressing room.

We watched each others’ work. Offered opinions. Celebrated achievements.

We understood each other. Dialogued what this career meant to us, and how in the world could we leave it. Discussed priorities. Life. Opportunity.

As the saying goes, “The news goes on, with or without you.” It can be a harsh pill to swallow. But the news won’t be the same without Trishna delivering it.

She’s truly a class act. I can’t wait to see what she does next. United Way of the Greater Capital Region hit the jackpot.

Let me worry about the numbers so you can start clearing the fridge for art. Let’s start planning for your future kiddo today.
