Agricultural extension is not a welfare service—it’s a value proposition.

Today was a powerful day of reflection at . With over 250 stakeholders and representation from the Minister of Agriculture, the message was clear: the bridge between research and farmers is currently broken, and it’s time to fix it.

My key takeaways from the day:

A Business Mindset: Extension must be treated as a revenue-earning profession. We must move away from the "welfare" mindset to one of defined value.

The AI Shift: AI won't replace extension workers, but it will replace those who fail to adopt it.

Alignment is Key: Agro-dealers and exporters are succeeding in extension because their financial incentives are perfectly aligned with farmer outcomes.

Sustainability: We must move past "project-based" forums that collapse when external funding ends. Institutionalized local funding is the only way forward.

Following the recent demand aggregation exercise conducted by our community Agricultural Promoters, GAO-UG Limited has proactively undertaken significant actions aimed specifically at addressing and fulfilling the pressing demands of farmers for timely planting.
Today, supply of quality maize seeds kicked of in Alebtong district, a total of 158 youth and women-led enterprises, all of whom are actively participating in the maize value chain, have accesses affordable high-quality, climate-smart maize seeds. This strategic intervention comes as a first-class solution to the persistent challenge of delayed seed supply that has plagued many small scale farmers, effectively dismantling the barriers that previously hindered their access to quality seed varieties.
By leveraging the insights gathered from the demand aggregation excercis, we anticipate a substantial increase in employment opportunities for women and youth within the maize value chain, enabling them to engage in farming as a viable and sustainable business. This season, our target is to extend access to quality seeds to over 12,000 farmers through our innovative demand aggregation and last-mile delivery model, which is designed to ensure that no farmer is left behind. Moreover, we are excited to announce that we are scaling this effective model to additional districts such as Dokolo, Otuke, Kwania, and Apac, ensuring that farmers do not miss the planting season merely due to challenges associated with the timely provision of quality seeds.RUFORUM Network Institute for International Business at The University of Iowa Mastercard Foundation Self Help Africa AGRA-Sustainably Growing Africa’s Food Systems.
