Beginnings/Background:
Uganda November of 2013: Jander Talen was on a hunt to find a hammock for his wife for her birthday. After he couldn't find one, he built a makeshift one out of some fabric and rope. Carlistus, Jander's friend, agreed to learn the art of making hammocks. After the two of them read some articles and watched some videos, they decided to start with making a relatively simple
knot style hammock to market to people in Uganda. With the possibility of expanding for Fair Trade sales in North America. Vision/Purpose:
This is the beginning of a business, a teaching business. An opportunity to mentor/teach/build relationships with Ugandan men in the following areas:
1) Teaching Skills: Teach Ugandan men the unique skill of making
handmade hammocks
2) Being Fair: Give the Ugandan workers 100% of the profit (while ensuring that some funds are invested back into growing the buisness).
3) Educate Financially: Setting aside time with the workers to teach how and why it is important to have a financial budget for their household. Teach how and why it is important to set aside savings. A lot of this will be done through being extremely transparent with running the financial aspect of the company.
4) Educate Biblically: More important than helping Ugandan men develop more financial freedom for their families is helping teach them of the freedom they have when they find that their identity is in Christ Jesus. Time will be set aside for the study of scripture and discussions of what it means to be a business that is centered on Christ. Our business will be outward focused as well giving 10% of gross profit to recipients/organizations of the workers’ choice.
