Currency Blues and the Mystery of Value

The other day I came across an invoice for the Singer Sewing machine my mother gave to my wife and now my daughter will be using in her fashion lessons. To my amazement, the date on the invoice was 17th July 1958 and the total cost of the sewing machine was Ushs 930. The machine is still in good condition and it is way older than me and by default all my family members. For the mathematical geniuses, you can calculate the age of this machine, 62 years and still strong.

Therein lies the currency blues and the mystery of value.

The value of the machine has increased over the years but the currency that was used to purchase it has lost value over the same period. Ushs 930 can not even purchase the famous Rolex or commando (Ugandans you know what I am talking about) and the Singer machine can still earn you a descent income and it has done so for the last 62 years.
The lesson here is do not keep your wealth in currency but in productive assets that will multiply your wealth so long as you keep them in good condition. Productive assets can be tangible like the sewing machine and a plot of land or they can be intangible like the knowledge and skills that you accumulate over the years. Never stay comfortable with money on your bank account or in your pockets until you spend it on a productive asset. That is the only way you can guarantee wealth building and sustainability for yourself, family and the generations after you.

So what value are you creating today? At Kampala Young Christians Multi-Purpose Co-operative, we strive to support our members to create value from your savings that will last generations into the future as long as our Lord tarries. It is not enough to save money and keep it in the bank. The money becomes valuable when invested in a productive asset whose value is eternal.

Poverty Demystified

In my last discourse on this platform, I talked about the different levels of wealth. This time I am going to focus on the first level of wealth; poverty. According to Britannica, poverty is the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions. The World Bank considers someone poor if they are living on less than US$ 1.9 a day. The most recent statistics show that one out of 10 people (approximately 750 million) in the world live in poverty if we are to go by the definition of the World Bank.

I hold a different view. Poverty is not defined by the money or material possessions we have but by the extent to which we tap into the wealth God created us with from the foundations of the world. Money and material possessions are just a manifestation of our wealth but not the wealth itself. Money is a standard measure that is used to place a value on the wealth we have. That is why Jesus Christ admonishes His disciples not to seek after money and material possessions but to seek first the Kingdom of God and all the rest would be added to them.

Money does not exist without wealth. Your wealth creates value that money exists to measure and to buy. We earn money so that we can buy the things we need, or we value. These things are created by someone to which this money belongs. That is why once we get money, we will seek out those people who have discovered their wealth and are creating value that society needs.
In the beginning God created man; male and female and in His Image, He created them with the potential to create just like He had created the earth and every living thing on the earth. The bible tells us that God blessed man and told them to be fruitful, increase in number, fill the earth, and subdue it. Therein lies the mystery of wealth and poverty. God created a self-sufficient man with everything they needed to prosper on this earth. His wealth was not to be derived from how much they earned or the educational qualifications they had.

The real purpose of formal education is not that you get a good job but that you discover your hidden wealth and exploit it for your prosperity. We have fallen for the lie that the more educated I am, the more I will prosper. You can have as many education qualifications you want, and you still remain poor unless your education helps you discover your hidden wealth. This explains why some people who have not been to formal schools go on to prosper more than what are considered the highly educated. The former discovered their hidden wealth and exploited it while the latter only attained a qualification without discovering their true wealth.

Therefore, quit looking for money and embark on the journey of discovering yourself. That journey starts with you discovering God your creator, that he may show you the wealth He deposited in you. Everything else we do builds on that foundation, without which we shall settle for chasing after the wind without end in sight.
