During slavery, it was illegal for Africans to read any book other than the Bible.

Anyone caught reading philosophy, science, governance, history, economics or any other genre of literature, faced the death penalty.

Why was this so?

The slave masters understood that the Bible was a tool to limit the thinking of black Africans and to keep them perpetually subservient.

They knew that to keep them in servitude they had to make them accept their lot as the will of God and have them thinking about the end of days, these things will keep them in perpetual servitude.

They refused to give them anything good but they gave them Christianity and the bible.

Over five hundred years later, the descendants of the slaves who were whipped, tortured, r***d and murdered, now confess implicit confidence in the same Bible. (a book hurriedly put together by Emperor Constantine in 325 AD when he decreed Christianity - an infusion of Roman paganism, Greek and Egyptian mythology" as the new State religion and his troops would violently convert most of the world's populations to this newly formed order by force and through violence. The Bible was central to the success of the trans Atlantic slavery.

On a trip to Cape Coast in Ghana 2010, I saw first hand the role Christianity played in slavery.

Slaves were first baptized and letters (signifyng their new names such as John, Peter, Isaac and other Christian names) engraved with hot metal in their backs - this was even before they learnt English.

While in chains, blood dripping from all over their bodies, they recited the Nicean creed, not knowing the meaning.

Biblical Verses used by Slave Masters to Justify Slavery

6:5
"Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ." lent divine credence to the predicament of slaves and consigned them to perpetual slavery.

6:9
And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.

3:22:
Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.

4:1
Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven.

2:9
Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them,

1 2:18
Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh.

Revolting against the oppressors, was a direct rejection of God - so they were made to believe.

Today, many Africans know the Bible from the beginning to the end but they know little about themselves or ideas that can improve their lives. They can feel Jesus in their spirits and they are absolutely sure that Christianity is the only true religion.

They are waiting for an apocalyptic climax to humanity where a blue eyed, blonde haired Caucasian savior would appear from the sky at the sound of a trumpet, to save them from debilitating poverty, a dysfunctional system, diseases and imbecility. 500 years later, Africans are still languishing in profuse ignorance.

The damage has been done.

In the words of the late scholar Dr. Henrik Clark;

"To control a people, you must first control what they think about themselves and how they regard their history and culture. And when your conqueror makes you ashamed of your culture and history, he needs no prison walls and chains to hold you".

Difference between "Contact" and "Connection"

An old teacher was being interviewed by a young professional. The professional started interviewing the teacher as planned earlier.

Young professional - "Sir, in your last lecture, you told us about "Contact" and "Connection." It's really confusing. Can you explain?"

The old teacher smiled and apparently deviating from the question asked the young professional:

*"Are you from this city?"*

*professional : "Yeah..."*

*Teacher : "Who are there at home?"*

*The professional felt that the teacher was trying to avoid answering his question since this was a very personal and unwarranted question. Yet the young professional said: "Mother had expired. Father is there. Three brothers and one sister. All married..."*

*The old teacher, with a smile on his face, asked again: "Do you talk to your father?"*

*The young professional looked visibly annoyed...*

*The old teacher : "When did you talk to him last?"*

*The young professional, supressing his annoyance said: "May be a month ago."*

*The old teacher : "Do your brothers and sisters meet often? When did you meet last as a family gathering?"*

*At this point, sweat appeared on the forehead of the young professional.*

*It seemed that the old teacher was interviewing the young professional.*

*With a sigh, the professional said: "We met last at festival two years ago."*

*The old teacher : "How many days did you all stay together?"*

*The young professional (wiping the sweat on his brow) said: "Three days..."*

*Old teacher : "How much time did you spend with your Father, sitting right beside him?"*

*The young professional looking perplexed and embarassed and started scribbling something on a paper...*

*The old teacher : "Did you have breakfast, lunch or dinner together? Did you ask how he was? Did you ask how his days are passing after your mother's death?"*

*Drops of tears started to flow from the eyes of the young professional.*

*The old teacher held the hand of the young professional and said: "Don't be embrassed, upset or sad. I am sorry if I have hurt you unknowingly... But this is basically the answer to your question about "Contact and Connection ." You have 'Contact' with your father but you don't have 'Connection' with him. You are not connected to him. Connection is between heart and heart...*
*Sitting together, sharing meals and caring for each other, touching, shaking hands, having eye contact, spending some time together... All your brothers and sisters have 'Contact' but no 'Connection' with each other..."*

*The young professional wiped his eyes and said : "Thanks Sir for teaching me a fine and unforgettable lesson."*

*This is the reality today.*
*Whether at home or in the society everybody has lots of contacts but there is no connection. Everybody is busy in his or her own world...*

*Let us not maintain just "Contacts" but let us remain "Connected." Caring, Sharing and Spending time with all our dear ones.*

President Yoweri Museveni has urged African Political leaders and the African people in general to shun the politics of identity that characterised most of the post-independence Africa noting that politics of identity that was mostly based on tribes and religions were counterproductive, diversionary and led to the emergency of many failed states in post-independence Africa.

The President was speaking yesterday at Meskel Square in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa were he addressed a mammoth rally of Ethiopian people that was also attended by many other African leaders to mark the inauguration of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for a new five year term.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had earlier in the morning taken the oath of office at Parliament administered by the Supreme Court chief Justice Meaza Ashenafi.

President Museveni who made the opening remarks for the Heads of State and Government said as an observer of African politics for the last 60 years, he had identified politics of identity especially of tribes and religions as one that greatly affected democratic and political progress of many African countries and hindered the continent's Social Economic Transformation and Development.

Museveni called upon the people of Ethiopia and the African continent in general to do away with politics of identity and focus on politics of interest and support leaders based on their political agenda as opposed to thier tribes or religious affiliations.

"I have been observing and participating in African politics for 60 years and politics of identity especially of tribes and religion to have caused many problems to many African countries including Uganda. Uganda just came up after we had shunned the politics of identity and substituted it with politics of interest and i would encourage Ethiopians to always remember that, " President Museveni said.

He commended the people of Ethiopia for conducting a credible democratic election and congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for being given the new five year mandate to serve his people and country.

In his remarks Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed promised to work and bring total peace for all Ethiopians especially by ending the war in the Tigray region which he said had made Ethiopia pay a heavy price.
