HONG KONG RACING – HAPPY VALLEY RACE 3 REVIEW
THE FRENCH MAY TROPHY (CLASS 3 – 1650M)
This was actually a very competitive and tactical Class 3 race with several runners bringing strong individual angles into the event.
At first glance, horses such as Fivefortwo, Romantic Gladiator, Stormi, Igor Stravinsky and Fortunate Son all had reasons to attract attention.
However, after reviewing recent form, steward reports, barriers, tactical setups, trackwork and course-distance profiles, the race ultimately became much more logical.
All Round Winner
All Round Winner brought one of the most complete profiles in the race.
The horse already had proven Happy Valley 1650m form, recent winning confidence, consistent tactical performances, race fitness and stable continuity in training.
Most importantly, the horse had already shown it was thriving under these exact conditions.
Its previous run also contained hidden merit. The horse became unbalanced after contact near the 1400m, was held up around the Home Turn and only obtained clear running later in the straight. Despite those interruptions, the horse still performed strongly.
Returning to the same course and distance with barrier 6, a manageable weight and the same jockey retained made the horse a very dangerous contender.
Fivefortwo
Fivefortwo was another major player in the race.
The horse brought proven course-distance winning form, strong recent consistency, tactical versatility and a very solid fitness profile.
Its previous Class 3 Division 2 run carrying 132lbs was much better than it looked on paper. Returning with barrier 2 gave the horse every chance to run another strong race.
Romantic Gladiator
Romantic Gladiator was an interesting improving horse with progressive form at 1650m, an ideal inside draw and a major jockey booking with Zac Purton.
Unfortunately, jumping only fairly from barrier 1 likely compromised the horse’s tactical advantage early.
Stormi
Stormi remained a dangerous pace-dependent runner.
The horse performs best when able to lead comfortably without using excessive energy in the early stages. Previous defeats were partly explained by difficult barriers forcing the horse to work too hard early.
Barrier 3 gave the horse a much more suitable setup.
Igor Stravinsky
Igor Stravinsky was one of the more interesting hidden-value runners in the race.
Its previous run contained several legitimate excuses including being crowded at the start, unable to secure position, suffering interference during the race and losing momentum at a critical stage.
These are exactly the kinds of runs experienced Hong Kong analysts often upgrade.
The Key Lesson
Happy Valley 1650m races are often decided by tactical positioning, proven course-distance ability, race fitness, stable continuity and efficient energy usage during the run.
Many horses can bring one attractive angle into a race.
But in Hong Kong racing, the winners are usually the horses with multiple factors aligned together.
That was ultimately the case with All Round Winner in Race 3.
