Canada’s high commissioner to India signals a deeper shift in education cooperation between the two countries, with Canadian institutions expanding their presence in India through transnational education models.

Key highlights:
🇨🇦 Canadian universities are exploring branch campuses, joint degrees, talent mobility, and hybrid delivery models in India.

🏫 The move aligns with Canada–India efforts to rebuild education and talent mobility ties following recent diplomatic tensions.

🎓 A joint Canada-India “talent and innovation strategy” has already engaged 20+ Canadian institutions in collaborative initiatives.

📊 Recent Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) data shows new Canadian study permits for Indian students fell sharply in 2025, down 64% year-on-year.

🔎 Despite the decline, Indian students remain a central pillar of Canada’s international education ecosystem.

The developments highlight a shift in Canada–India education engagement from student mobility alone towards deeper institutional partnerships, as both countries adapt to changing mobility patterns and policy conditions.

Recent research and surveys highlight a growing trend among international and domestic students: AI skills are now central to programme choice and career planning. Students are increasingly selecting STEM and non-STEM programmes that integrate AI learning to safeguard employability in a rapidly evolving job market.

Key insights:
🎯 Students are pivoting toward programmes that provide AI future-proofing, balancing technical and human skills.

💡 AI readiness is becoming a core employability advantage across business, health, engineering, and social sciences.

📈 Non-technical roles such as marketing and HR increasingly demand AI fluency, creating new career pathways.

🏫 Higher education is moving slower than the jobs market: over 50% of employers report difficulty finding AI-ready graduates, while 78% of universities believe they are meeting demand.

📖 However, leading institutions in higher education are gradually embedding AI coursework, tools, and work-integrated learning across disciplines to align with industry needs.

The report underscores that embedding AI skills across disciplines is becoming essential to meet both student expectations and employer needs, helping graduates stay competitive in an increasingly AI-driven job market.
