I was reading a very interesting piece by Simon Sinek on “Leaders Eat Last” and it gave me a fresh perspective on selflessness as a leader.

I was blessed to be promoted as a full manager to a team of 4 wonderful advisors. I’ve been preparing for this role for the last 2 years and when the moment finally came, i became excited but nervous at the same time.

I’m in the financial advisory industry and we source for clients to work with. I’ve been so used to focusing on personal goals and breaking the glass ceiling year after year. But this time i have to ensure that my advisors do the same.

This means that i have to sacrifice more time and compromise when needed to see them climb the ladder. Which means being more selfless and redefining my goals as a leader. I’ve decided to try to emphatize more and be at every step of the way for my guys. Including the whole rigmarole of facing rejection from clients and whatnot.

So eating last does not mean not eating at all.. But ensuring that your guys don’t starve and perform at their best because their success is also your success.
