It is almost a sure turn off to talk about financial planning because once you mention these 2 taboo words, people think you are just trying to sell them a policy and earn a commission.
What if there were financial planners out there who GENUINELY wants to offer you a service that will benefit your financial future, but was brushed off before he could approach you?
Yes, I was one of them. I’ve come to realise that stopping you at a roadshow during your commute/day out with your loved ones is rude, unpleasant and definitely a waste of both our time. I can understand why you avoid me like I was a zombie from the walking dead.
It is definitely not realistic to draft out a proper recommendation to suit your needs within 5 minutes of knowing you from a roadshow. That’s what salespeople do.
You see, it takes 2 hands to clap. You need to be ready to talk about your own finances before you are open to listen to what I have to say. It needs to be in the right place (conducive environment), right time (when you are ready) in order for us to establish a relationship.
If you’re not ready, hard selling you a 25 year savings plan is not only a huge turn off, it also makes me “just another salesperson” trying to “scam your money.”
My job as a wealth manager is to make sure you see the importance of financial planning and understand that by delaying financial planning, you are delaying your progress towards financial freedom.
My job is to help you come up with a strategy to reach your financial goals in a realistic time frame, with a proper portfolio set up.
You see, in proper financial planning, financial planners like to share about the financial pyramid. I’d like to share with you my own version, which I call the “3 Musketeers” concept.
1st musketeer: THE PROTECTOR. His role in your portfolio is to build a strong house and make sure that it will not be destroyed by a disaster. In another context, he is your insurance to protect your wealth so it will not be jeopardised by any unforeseen life events such as accident, Critical illness and disability.
2nd musketeer: THE ACCUMULATOR. His role is to gradually gather and grow crops and vegetables to make sure there will always be food. In a portfolio, he is responsible for accumulating your wealth in a safe environment and make sure that you will have a huge stash of money at the end of the day.
3rd musketeer: THE ACCELERATOR. This is my favourite musketeer. He goes out to hunt for the meat so you can feast and enjoy your meals! In this context it is your investments that can generate the extra income every month so you can reach your financial goals faster, achieve financial freedom and enjoy the finer things in life!
Question: which musketeer(s) have you engaged and which is missing? Is the musketeer doing enough? Are there ways to strengthen your musketeers?
Let’s face it.
You only want to talk about them when you are ready. And when you are, you want to make sure you are speaking to a real wealth manager, not a salesperson.
