Japan’s Nikkei 225 breached 65,000 for the first time Monday, hitting a record high in holiday-thinned Asia trading after reports that the crucial Strait of Hormuz may reopen soon pushed oil prices down and lifted investor sentiment. President Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post that negotiations with Iran were “proceeding in an orderly and constructive manner,” adding that he had told his representatives “not to rush into a deal in that time is on [their] side.

US natural gas futures fell toward $3.0 per MMBtu, retreating from two-month highs, pressured by elevated storage levels. The EIA report showed energy firms injected 101 bcf of gas into storage for the week ended May 15, above market expectations for a 95-bcf build and the five-year average increase of 92 bcf for the period.
Additional pressure came from softer LNG export activity. Flows to major US LNG export facilities declined from a monthly record of 18.8 bcfd in April to around 17.0 bcfd so far in May, due to seasonal maintenance at facilities including Golden Pass LNG and Freeport LNG. However, losses were partly limited by forecasts pointing to mostly warmer-than-normal weather through early June, which is expected to increase cooling demand and boost gas consumption from the power sector.
Supportive signals also emerged from reports that three US LNG cargoes are scheduled to arrive in China in June, marking the first such shipments since February 2025.

Copper futures fell to around $6.2 per pound on Tuesday, reaching their lowest levels in nearly two weeks as a broader selloff in equities fueled risk-averse sentiment amid escalating uncertainty in the Middle East. Markets reacted cautiously to President Donald Trump’s comments suggesting possible progress toward a peace agreement with Iran, with investors remaining skeptical that a resolution to the conflict was near.
Elevated oil prices and accelerating inflation also strengthened expectations for further central bank interest rate hikes. Higher borrowing costs are seen weighing on global economic growth and manufacturing activity, adding pressure to the outlook for industrial metals demand.
Sentiment was further hurt by fresh signs of weakness in China’s economy, as retail sales and industrial production both fell short of expectations, while fixed asset investment unexpectedly contracted, deepening concerns over demand prospects in the world’s largest copper consumer.

Japan’s economy grew at an annualized 2.1% in the first quarter of 2026, surpassing analysts’ expectations, on the back of improved consumption and strong exports. The growth was sharply higher compared with Reuters-polled analysts’ average estimate of 1.7%, and against the 1.3% in the previous quarter. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the economy expanded 0.5%, government data released Tuesday showed, compared with estimates of 0.4%, and improving from the 0.3% growth at the end of 2025. GDP expanded 0.6%, year on year. These figures do not capture the full impact of the Iran war, which started at the end of February.

The Euro (EUR) is ticking higher against the US Dollar (USD) on Monday, trading near 1.1635 at the time of writing, after hitting fresh six-week lows a few pips above 1.1600 earlier on the day. The pair is shrugging off the dismal market sentiment, although high Oil prices are likely to keep upside attempts in check. The EUR/USD is ticking up on Monday but maintains a bearish near-term tone with price holding below a dense band of horizontal resistance clustered between 1.1650 and 1.1675

President Donald Trump was greeted by Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing Thursday, kicking off a highly anticipated summit that will include discussions on Iran, Taiwan and artificial intelligence. Trump landed in Beijing on Wednesday evening local time and was greeted at the airport by China’s Vice President Han Zheng, a military band, and hundreds of young people waving flags. Expectations for concrete deliverables from the summit remain low, however, as structural competition and distrust between the two superpowers run deep. Trump is accompanied by a delegation of high-profile business leaders, including tech billionaires Elon Musk and Jensen Huang. Trump and Xi will have a bilateral tea and working lunch on Friday, before the U.S. leader returns to Washington.
