US stocks advanced as a bullish outlook from Nvidia Corp. bolstered confidence that the rapid growth in artificial-intelligence spending is likely to run for longer. Nasdaq 100 contracts climbed 0.8%, while S&P 500 futures rose 0.3%. Nvidia jumped 5.8% in early trading after issuing a revenue growth forecast for fiscal 2028 far above expectations. Salesforce Inc. surged 10% as the software firm’s outlook reassured investors it can compete successfully in the AI era. Treasuries fell, with 10-year yields up one basis point to 4.66%. The dollar was little changed, while gold hovered near $4,600 an ounce. Brent crude rose modestly to snap a three-day stretch of losses.

Australian consumer prices rose more than expected in July as fuel costs jumped, data showed on Wednesday, while core inflation also exceeded forecasts and added to the risk of another hike in interest rates. That was enough to send the local dollar up 0.3% to $0.7183, hitting a 12-week high, while three-year government bond futures reversed an earlier rally to be last down 4 ticks at 95.41.Traders are scrambling to reprice the risk of a fourth rate hike from the Reserve Bank of Australia this year, with a move in September now priced at 38%, up from just 17% before. They are now fully expecting a rate hike by February next year.

Oil prices dropped about 2 per cent on Wednesday, adding to the previous session's losses, on fresh hopes the Strait of Hormuz could reopen after Iran said it had resumed talks with neighbour Oman on managing the strategic waterway. Brent crude futures fell $1.78, or 2.0 per cent, to $86.80 a barrel by 0027 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were down $1.49, or 1.8 per cent, at $80.87. Both benchmarks lost more than 3 per cent on Tuesday. Iran and Oman have been in on-and-off talks for weeks about controlling traffic through the waterway, which handled one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments before the war began in February.

Canada struck back at the United States on Tuesday with retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion worth of American goods, including steel, dairy products, appliances and farm equipment, as the trade war between the once-friendly neighbors escalated sharply. The confrontation threatened one of the world's largest trading relationships and further strained ties between the United States and a country long considered one of its closest allies. A prolonged dispute could raise costs for American businesses and consumers less than 2 1/2 months before the midterm elections.

Moody’s Ratings upgraded Pakistan’s sovereign credit rating, citing a stronger external position, better fiscal metrics and lower domestic financing costs, extending a recovery in the South Asian nation’s credit profile. The ratings firm raised Pakistan to B3 from Caa1 and maintained a stable outlook, it said in a statement on Monday. Pakistan’s external vulnerabilities have eased as foreign-exchange reserves steadily increased, supported by sustained macroeconomic stabilization, Moody’s said. Even with the upgrade, Pakistan’s debt remains in speculative-grade territory, though its risk assessment has improved from very high to high. Argentina, Nigeria and Kyrgyzstan have similarly rated sovereign debt.

Gold traded above $4,500 an ounce on Friday and was on course for a third consecutive weekly gain, as investors turned to safe-haven metals amid heightened volatility across currency and bond markets, while rising oil prices continued to underscore inflationary risks.
The precious metal jumped more than 4% on Wednesday after the US Treasury Department announced plans to at least double its long-term debt buybacks in an effort to contain borrowing costs, driving Treasury yields and the dollar sharply lower. Gold held on to those gains even after Treasury yields reversed Wednesday’s decline amid concerns that the government’s efforts to rein in long-term borrowing costs may provide only a temporary solution.
Meanwhile, oil prices extended their advance as the US prepares sweeping new economic sanctions against Iran. Elsewhere, gold remained supported by robust investment demand and continued central bank purchases,

U.S. Stocks Lose $420 Billion as Bond Market Concerns Intensify

U.S. equities came under significant pressure on August 18, with approximately $420 billion in market value wiped out amid growing concerns surrounding the U.S. bond market. Major technology and semiconductor stocks, including Nvidia, Amazon, Tesla, AMD, Micron, and Meta, recorded notable declines.

The sell-off highlights the broader sensitivity of equity markets to bond yields, investor sentiment, and changing expectations around the U.S. economy and monetary policy. As bond-market volatility increases, investors are closely watching whether pressure on equities could extend further.

Oil rose for a fourth day, with no sign of progress toward a resolution of the US-Iran war after almost six months of conflict. Brent climbed toward $92 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate was near $86. US President Donald Trump insisted Tuesday there were no talks ongoing with Tehran, with the status of the Strait of Hormuz still contested. Visible traffic through the waterway which links Persian Gulf producers to global markets — remained low. On Tuesday, the UK said a vessel leaving the strait was hit by a projectile, causing one casualty, while on Wednesday, two Chinese-linked supertankers U-turned, according to tracking data.
