Hantavirus is now reaching more countries — and the list keeps growing.

Israel has confirmed its first hantavirus case — a patient believed to have been infected during a stay in Eastern Europe, not linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship outbreak. The patient is in stable condition and under medical observation, with the case reported to Israel’s Health Ministry. Importantly, this case involves a European strain of the virus — distinct from the more dangerous Andes strain spreading on the cruise ship, which has limited human-to-human transmission capability.

Meanwhile, as of May 8, the MV Hondius outbreak has nine suspected cases and six confirmed cases across multiple countries, with three deaths recorded. The WHO continues to assess the global public health risk as low, emphasizing that the Andes virus only spreads through close, prolonged contact — not casual interaction.
