The Reserve Bank of Australia has opted to leave the official cash rate on hold at 4.35 per cent, where it has been all year. The central bank began an aggressive tightening cycle in 2022, hiking interest rates 13 times, most recently in November 2023. It acknowledged in its statement on monetary policy on Tuesday that its path to potential rate cuts and relief for borrows "remains incredibly uncertain".Concerns had been raised falls in Australian and overseas stock markets would affect the bank's decision — on Monday the Australian stock exchange had its worst day since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, falling about 5.7 per cent from last week's record highs. In its explanation of the decision to leave rates on hold, the bank acknowledged that globally "financial markets have been volatile of late and the Australian dollar has depreciated.

Donald Trump was shot in the ear during a Saturday campaign rally, streaking the Republican presidential candidate’s blood across his face and prompting his security agents to swarm him, before he emerged and pumped his fist in the air, appearing to mouth the words “Fight! Fight! Fight!”. One of the rally attendees was killed in the shooting, and and two rally-goers were critically injured, according to the Secret Service. All of the victims were male, according to the FBI. The shocking episode that threatened Trump’s life raises grave questions about security and how the former president was shot at, with lawmakers already calling for an investigation into the Secret Service’s handling of Saturday’s rally.
