One of the most common mistakes I see is parents insuring their children while remaining uninsured or inadequately insured themselves.

Many parents say they want insurance “for their kids” and end up getting the kids insured first. But if the goal is to protect the children financially, it often makes more sense to insure the parents, the income generators, and make the children the beneficiaries.

After all, the parents are usually the ones earning the income and paying the bills. If a parent dies, becomes disabled, or gets critically ill, the family’s finances are at risk, not because the child was uninsured, but because the breadwinner was.

The best insurance “for your kids” is often insurance on the parents.

Your life insurance coverage, divided by your household’s monthly expenses, gives an estimate of how many months of financial provision you are leaving for your family if you pass away.

And that’s assuming none of it is used for funeral, burial, or other final expenses. If a portion of the proceeds goes toward those costs, the actual financial support left for your loved ones will be even less.
