Some of the most useful things a founder learns do not come from a stage. They come from another founder sitting across the table, being honest about their journey and what it actually took.

On September 11 we are gathering our alumni and founders of DB Founders Circle at Likhaan HQ in Mandaluyong. No panel, no program. Just Filipino founders in different seasons, learning from each other's experience.

If you were already born in the early 2000s, you probably grew up assuming Yellow Cab was American (like some of us from Dream Bigger at first ๐Ÿ˜Œ)

But Hanky Lee and his co-founders never once said it was American. It was all superb branding and great food. People's perception just became reality.

It was Filipino ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ the whole time! Built so well that even people abroad thought it came from somewhere else.

Hanky believes that Filipinos can build world-class brands. Yellow Cab was the proof all along.

Every entrepreneur has a starting point. For Hanky Lee, it began with a container of bread, a simple idea, and a family of entrepreneurs who shaped the way he saw business.

Hanky Lee is one of the co-founders of Yellow Cab Pizza and now one of the owners and innkeeper of The Henry Hotels.

From last Wednesday's Members Roundtable, led by Christeen.

She walked the group through Design Thinking. Christeen describes it just a disciplined way of caring about people (your customers), SO YOU CAN BUILD something that actually enriches their life.

Many businesses fail because the founder solved the wrong problem, or the right problem for the wrong person. Design thinking is how you avoid that before you spend your runway building the wrong thing.

This is what a regular Wednesday looks like inside Founders Circle.

In 2019, I came to Manila to speak at a conference while working at Apple. Since I was already in the Philippines, I decided to stay a few extra days and organize a youth startup event called the Dream Bigger Manila Pitch Competition.

I expected a small gathering. Instead, something incredible happened. Volunteers stepped up, people donated their time, skills, and resources, and the event came together with very little effort on my part. The message of "Dream Bigger" seemed to resonate with so many Filipinos.

The event exceeded every expectation. Afterward, founders started reaching out for mentorship, and as I boarded my flight back to the US, I sensed God saying, "You're going to do more business in the Philippines one day."

Back in Silicon Valley, I stayed connected with the founders I had met and began mentoring and investing where I could. Then the pandemic hit, and I was asked to lead Apple's COVID-19 response for more than 500 retail stores across 20+ countries. My connection with the Philippines naturally took a back seat.

But in late 2020, God wouldn't let it go. After waking me up at 3:30 a.m. four nights in a row, He impressed on my heart to "come and see" what He was doing in the Philippines. I spent months praying, fasting, interviewing founders, pastors, and leaders, and seeking confirmation.

Finally, with peace from God, I resigned from Apple in 2021, relocated to Manila, and launched Dream Bigger.

Looking back, I can see that Dream Bigger wasn't born from a business plan. It was born from a simple invitation from God to trust Him one step at a time.

And by His grace, we're still saying yes.

Most people think success is just wealth. But Charles Sy learned that chasing money alone is how many businesses fail.

He learned to ask a different question: what problem am I solving?

Solve a real problem, one day at a time, and the success follows. People pay for value.

What would you do if you lost your entire business overnight? No inventory. No income. 70 employees depending on you.

This is the story of Charles Sy, and the decisions he made in the worst season of his entrepreneurship journey are the reason his business came back stronger.

At Dream Bigger, one of our core values is Freedom: choosing love over fear, and sacrifice over selfishness. Charles had every reason to protect himself first. He chose differently, and what happened after that is something you need to read for yourself.

His full video interview is also on our YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/_Tf5OLktPKQ

Charles is part of the Dream Bigger community. If you're a Filipino entrepreneur who's been through hard seasons and wondered if doing the right thing is worth it, this story is for you.
