🕰️ How Did the Insurance Industry Start?
📜 1. Ancient Beginnings (circa 3000–2000 BC):
The Babylonians, Chinese, and Greeks all had early forms of risk-sharing.

Merchants would distribute their goods across several ships to minimize the loss from one sinking.

In Babylon, the Code of Hammurabi included clauses where lenders would forgive loans if a shipment was lost at sea—a super early form of marine insurance!

⚓ 2. Marine Insurance in Medieval Times (1100s–1300s):
As trade exploded in Europe, Italian merchants began formalizing marine insurance contracts.

This helped protect against shipwrecks, piracy, and cargo loss.

🏛️ 3. The Birth of Modern Insurance – Lloyd’s of London (Late 1600s):
In a London coffee house owned by Edward Lloyd, merchants, shipowners, and underwriters gathered to discuss shipping risks.

This became Lloyd’s of London, the most famous insurance marketplace in the world.

After the fire destroyed over 13,000 houses, fire insurance emerged.
