As a naive 20-year-old in 2021, during the height of the pandemic, I found myself endlessly scrolling through social media videos about financial freedom and investing. I didnโt know much, but I was eager to learn. So when an insurance agent visited our home and heard I was interested in investments, they offered me a VUL plan.
It all happened so fast. I felt excited (but also pressured) to sign the contract on the spot. At first, I was proud. It felt like my first โrealโ adult decision.
By 2022, I went back to college and shifted to ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐. The more I learned, the more curious I became. In late 2023, we were assigned to act as portfolio managers and build financial plans for mock clients. Thatโs when I discovered something that caught me off guard: ๐ถ๐ป๐๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐ณ๐๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ฎ๐น๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฏ๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฎ ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ผ๐ปโ๐ ๐ป๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐ต.
That major task made me check my own policy. In 2023, my managed fundโs value was around โฑ7,000. But in early 2024, it had dropped to โฑ4,000. Thatโs when I requested a policy review and hereโs what I discovered:
