A huge number of us decided to welcome new pups into our homes over the last couple of years – according to Kennel Club figures dog ownership soared over the global pandemic.

There are a whopping 221 different breeds of pedigree dog to choose from, alongside numerous crossbreeds, so there’s plenty of thinking to do before you select your family’s latest addition.

There’s even academic guidance to seek out, with Psychologist Stanley Coren’s book ‘The Intelligence of Dogs’ ranking breeds by instincts, obedience, and the ability to adapt.

One thing to take into consideration is that some dogs are well-known for their propensity to turn into so-called ‘velcro dogs’.

These are pets that tend to stick to their owners like glue, becoming anxious even if separated for a short period of time.

In one way this can be good – making you feel utterly loved by your pooch, who will be eager to please and would be highly unlikely to ever run away or get lost.

But it can also be exhausting if your dog is never content to curl up by itself for a few hours while you get on with other parts of your live.

Of course not all pup from a breed that are prone to this personality will turn out to be so needy, but it’s worth nothing that they are ones likely to be most clingy.

So, here are the 10 breeds of pup prone to becoming ‘velcro dogs’.

04/03/2023

Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that can affect all dogs, but unvaccinated dogs and puppies younger than four months old are the most at risk. Dogs that are ill from canine parvovirus infection are often said to have "parvo." The virus affects dogs' gastrointestinal tracts and is spread by direct dog-to-dog contact and contact with contaminated f***s (stool), environments, or people. The virus can also contaminate kennel surfaces, food and water bowls, collars and leashes, and the hands and clothing of people who handle infected dogs. It is resistant to heat, cold, humidity, and drying, and can survive in the environment for long periods of time. Even trace amounts of f***s from an infected dog may harbor the virus and infect other dogs that come into the infected environment. The virus is readily transmitted from place to place on the hair or feet of dogs or via contaminated cages, shoes, or other objects.

Signs of parvovirus
Some of the signs of parvovirus include lethargy; loss of appetite; abdominal pain and bloating; fever or low body temperature (hypothermia); vomiting; and severe, often bloody, diarrhea. Persistent vomiting and diarrhea can cause rapid dehydration, and damage to the intestines and immune system can cause septic shock.

If your puppy or dog shows any of these signs, you should contact your veterinarian immediately.
Most deaths from parvovirus occur within 48 to 72 hours following the onset of clinical signs. If your puppy or dog shows any of these signs, you should contact your veterinarian immediately.

Diagnosis and treatment
Parvovirus infection is often suspected based on the dog's history, physical examination, and laboratory tests. F***l testing can confirm the diagnosis.

No specific drug is available that will kill the virus in infected dogs, and treatment is intended to support the dog's body systems until the dog's immune system can fight off the viral infection. Treatment should be started immediately and consists primarily of intensive care efforts to combat dehydration by replacing electrolyte, protein and fluid losses, controlling vomiting and diarrhea, and preventing secondary infections. Sick dogs should be kept warm and receive good nursing care. When a dog develops parvo, treatment can be very expensive, and the dog may die despite aggressive treatment. Early recognition and aggressive treatment are very important in successful outcomes. With proper treatment, survival rates can approach 90%.

Since parvovirus is highly contagious, isolation of infected dogs is necessary to minimize spread of infection. Proper cleaning and disinfection of contaminated kennels and other areas where infected dogs are (or have been) housed is essential to control the spread of parvovirus. The virus is not easily killed, so consult your veterinarian for specific guidance on cleaning and disinfecting agents.

Preventing parvovirus
Vaccination and good hygiene are critical components of prevention.

Young puppies are very susceptible to infection, particularly because the natural immunity provided in their mothers' milk may wear off before the puppies' own immune systems are mature enough to fight off infection. If a puppy is exposed to canine parvovirus during this gap in protection, it may become ill. An additional concern is that immunity provided by a mother's milk may interfere with an effective response to vaccination. This means even vaccinated puppies may occasionally be infected by parvovirus and develop disease. To reduce gaps in protection and provide the best protection against parvovirus during the first few months of life, a series of puppy vaccinations are administered. Puppies should receive a dose of canine parvovirus vaccine between 14 and 16 weeks of age, regardless of how many doses they received earlier, to develop adequate protection.

To protect their adult dogs, pet owners should be sure that their dog's parvovirus vaccination is up-to-date. There are titers available that measure the dog's level of antibodies against the canine parvovirus, but the antibody level may not directly translate to protection if the dog is exposed to the virus. Ask your veterinarian about a recommended prevention program for your dog.

Until a puppy has received its complete series of vaccinations, pet owners should use caution when bringing their pet to places where young puppies congregate (e.g. pet shops, parks, puppy classes, obedience classes, doggy daycare, kennels, and grooming establishments). Reputable establishments and training programs reduce exposure risk by requiring vaccinations, health examinations, good hygiene, and isolation of ill puppies and dogs. Contact with known infected dogs and their premises should always be avoided.

In spite of proper vaccination, a small percentage of dogs do not develop protective immunity and remain susceptible to infection.

Finally, do not let your puppy or adult dog to come into contact with the f***l waste of other dogs while walking or playing outdoors. Prompt and proper disposal of waste material is always advisable as a way to limit spread of canine parvovirus infection as well as other diseases that can infect humans and animals.

Dogs with vomiting or diarrhea or other dogs which have been exposed to ill dogs should not be taken to kennels, show grounds, dog parks, or other areas where they will come into contact with other dogs. Similarly, unvaccinated dogs should not be exposed to ill dogs or those with unknown vaccination histories. People who are in contact with sick or exposed dogs should avoid handling of other dogs or at least wash their hands and change their clothes before doing so.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines has one of the highest dog and cat ownership rates in Asia, and this is seen to drive pet food sales to expand nine percent this year, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) said.

In its latest pet food market brief, the USDA-Foreign Agricultural Service forecasted pet food sales in the Philippines are estimated to grow by nine percent to $434 million this year.

“Product prospects include dry and wet pet food as well as treats and mixers,” it said.

“As pets became more popular household companions, especially during the pandemic, pet ownership and pet food sales have grown immensely over the past five years,” the USDA added.

The report, citing the 2021 Rakuten survey in Asia, said the Philippines ranked the highest in terms of dog ownership at 67 percent and the second highest in cat ownership at 43 percent.

And according to the Pet Food Institute, more than 50 percent of the dog and cat population feed on table scraps, showing a large potential for conversion to dry pet food.

The USDA said it projects sales of dog food, mostly dry, to increase by nine percent this year.

“Economy dry dog food forms the bulk of dog food sales due to the high demand for affordability and convenience,” it said.

Meanwhile, the US agency said cat food – mostly wet type – is estimated to grow by 13 percent this year.

“Mid-priced wet cat food remains the preferred pet food for cats in the Philippines,” it said.

The report also said pet food treats and mixers also present an opportunity.

“Growth in pet food for birds, fishes and small mammals or reptiles remains minimal, averaging $4 million since 2017,” the USDA said.

With one of the highest dog and cat ownership rates in Asia, the US agency said the Philippines presents a growing opportunity for US pet food.

This, as most pure-breed pet owners are found to prefer imported pet food despite more local manufacturers showing interest in tapping the market.

“While people were confined to their homes during the pandemic, dog and cat adoptions increased and pet food consumption grew. Dog and cat food exports from the US reached a record high in 2021 and will continue to increase, though with slower growth in 2023,” the USDA said.

The country imports a majority of dog and cat food from Thailand, the US and Europe.

Pet food from the US dominated the market from 2016 to 2019. In 2021, the Philippines ranked as the ninth largest market for US dog and cat food.

We all hear about the lazy fat cat who just sits in the sun all day, but is that what they really want? Being the lazy cat is not the positice experience they are looking for and there are many ways you can enrich a cat's environment! In an enriched environment, cats have the opportunity to create a positive experience on their own and may even help correct naughty behaviors, especially for the indoor cats. Here are a few tips on how you can enrich your cat's environment.

To maintain good mental health, indoor cats need stimulation and recreational opportunities. Environmental enrichment can be accomplished by providing your cat(s) with a variety of toys and opportunities to play. Toys should be rotated on a daily basis so that they maintain novelty. Cat nip may foster or renew interest in “old” toys. Novel items to investigate such as a paper bag can provide recreational opportunities.

Set play sessions with people using toys such as a feather teaser (wand and feather on a string toy) allow for physical exercise, mental stimulation, and social needs. This is important for indoor cats who often do not get enough exercise. You will know if your cat enjoys these sessions by his or her desire to interact.

Clicker training can be mentally stimulating for cats. Cats can easily be taught to ‘sit’ or ‘go to a spot’ on cue. While some cats will respond to food rewards, others are more interested in toys.

A home with multiple climbing trees and perches allow for cats to use the entire three-dimensional space. This increases territory and can reduce social stress. From an elevated position, cats are more likely to feel secure and can survey the entire environment. In multi-cat households, trees and perches provide havens to sleep, perch, and hide. Consider adding windowsill perches and climbing trees to the home.

It is also important that cats have a place that they perceive as safe to eat, drink, sleep, and eliminate. Providing each cat with their own feeding/watering station, resting location, and litter box can reduce social stress. Foraging toys such as a puzzle feeder can be used for enrichment and make cats ‘work’ for their food. A few (2 to 6) treat dishes may be randomly filled with 1-2 small tasty treats and hidden in the cat’s environment to foster exploratory “hunting” behavior.

Cats should be provided with a scratching post (vertical or horizontal arrangement pending your cats preference). The scratching post should be located in a ‘lived in’ area of the home or near the cat’s favorite resting spot. Objects to scratch typically are made of carpet, cardboard, or natural sisal. Your cat may have a individual preference for the surface to scratch.

Environmental enrichment can be accomplished by providing your cat(s) with trees, perches, bags, beds, toys, and secure places to sleep, eat and use the litter box. It is important for your cat’s mental health and creates a happier experience for both you and your cat.
