Ensuring Integrity of user data through the use of Digital Identity

Data is now often referred to as the new oil—a critical resource that powers economies and drives innovation. For user data to be valuable, it has to be trusted, consistent and, accurate, to maintain its integrity and value. In Papua New Guinea (PNG), managing user data effectively is essential for digital transformation and economic growth. Central to this effort is the concept of digital identity, which plays a crucial role in ensuring the integrity, security, and privacy of user data. This article explores how digital identity can safeguard user data integrity and highlights the importance of user awareness in this process. Digital identity (ID) requires more than just technology; it also requires informed and responsible users.

Integrity of user data depends on key stages in the generation/capture, storage and use of data as follows:
1. Accurate and relevant data collection;
2. Controlled access to data;
3. Audit trails and accountability;
4. Data synchronisation; and
5. Enhanced security measures.

Digital ID ensures accurate user data is generated and/or captured, and access to the user data is controlled by authenticating, verifying and authorising user access. Digital IDs systems create audit trails of user data being accessed or modified and ensures accountability. In addition interoperable digital ID systems can allow for real time updates across integrated systems allowing synchronisation, which maintains consistency and integrity across different systems. Underlying to maintaining integrity of user data, digital ID systems utilise encryption of data while in use, in transit and at rest. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) such as biometrics, combined with one-time passcodes, prevents unauthorised access to user data.

Ensuring the integrity of user data through secured and robust digital identity systems is vital. By leveraging the use of digital identity, organisations will unlock the full potential of data as a valuable resource, driving growth and development in our economy.

Data privacy is about users having the ability to protect and control their personal information. It ensures that users have the right to decide how their data is collected, used, and shared, to safeguard their privacy and autonomy. Effective data privacy measures give individuals confidence that their personal details are secured from unauthorised access and misuse.

Alternatively, data sharing involves users giving explicit consent regarding which aspects of their personal data can be shared and with whomever. This process ensures transparency and trust, as users are informed about what data is being shared, the purpose of sharing, and the parties involved. By agreeing to data sharing, users can manage their digital footprint and participate in data exchanges that offer mutual benefits, such as personalised services or enhanced user experiences, while still maintaining control over their personal information.
