In November 2019 my dad had a double brain aneurysm.
At the time, his and our family's only priority was for him to survive. Nothing else mattered. Following brain surgery and an extensive hospital stay, I could barely comprehend it when he walked out.
That was a huge win, but the hard road had just started.
Avoiding stress and his recovery were now the top priorities.
For 18 months he was unable to work and had no income. Failing to qualify for any sickness benefits or ACC compensation with a mortgage and life to pay for, he was forced back onto the building site. Talk about stress!
These days he's still chipping away, but he's still unable to do a full weeks work.
