Next72Hours - Disaster and Emergency Preparedness

Website

Next72Hours is a website dedicated to Survival in the modern world. We want to equip people to be confident and resourceful.

It is not hard to see that our planet is suffering more and more from big weather events and natural disasters. It is also clear to see that the majority of people are not prepared for such events. It is now commonly accepted worldwide that in the event of a major disaster, be that localized or nation wide, it may take up to 72 hours (three days) before vital services such as power, sewerage and clean drinking water can be restored or until suitable replacements can be found. In some places it can take much longer than this. If the event is big enough, vital services can take weeks to restore - assuming the event is a one off, and not recurrent as in the recent earthquakes in Christchurch. We cannot afford to ignore the changes around us and believe that “it will not happen to me” or “she’ll be right”. When disaster strikes, it is imperative everybody has the know how and supplies to be able to look after themselves and those around them until help arrives. More often than not the initial focus after disasters will be on rescue (such as Urban Search and Rescue teams going though collapsed buildings and Dog teams searching through debris to try to locate people). In many cases there just may not be enough resources to go around. They may be blocked off from accessing your area. Worse yet, in the case of a large scale event, the resources may be wiped out altogether. The smallest amount of preparation can make the world of difference when it comes to coping well in situations like this. We urge you to take steps NOW towards being more independent, resourceful and community minded.

Great to see the Red New Zealand Red Cross teams out doing the Hard Work. Having been on a couple of events with them with LandSAR and other groups, I have always been in awe of their skills, and the hours of time they give up to help their communities.

| Volcanic activity could escalate with little or no warning, however any significant impact to the mainland remains very unlikely.

21/10/2026

GeoNet has raised the alert level as Whakaari/White Island volcano is now continuously passively erupting. They say more explosive eruptions could occur suddenly and be a threat to life on the crater floor and the area immediately offshore, southeast from the island.

Packing essentials 💅🎒
Let's pack together this ShakeOut! Start with the basics ✨

Shake out is all about practising what to do during an earthquake, but emergencies can happen anytime. Whether it's an earthquake, tsunami, fire, or another event that means you need to leave quickly, having a grab bag ready can make a big difference.

Remember any medications you might need. Then add must-haves for your whānau, including food, equipment, and supplies for children and pets.

For more information head to the get ready website: https://getready.govt.nz/prepared/household/supplies

| The quake was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometres.

A qe bit of a shake there, remember to head on over to getready.govt.nz and use these events as a gentle reminder to get your preparedness under way. Start small, but do start, with all that is happening around the world, and without fear mongering, its is a question of when not if, we will have another major quake in NZ or any other number of disasters. Even the simplest supplies and preparedness will make a horrible situation that much more bearable. You may have a lot of what you need already, so then it comes down to putting it somewhere you will be able to find it in a hurry and possible the dark.

Keep safe folks and stay prepared

Imagine that warning coming through 9.9 is hard to even fathom....let alone a false alert

The Japan Meteorological Agency withdrew an earthquake early warning issued Friday afternoon after initially forecasting what would have been the strongest earthquake in history.
