I've made plenty of mistakes investing... 😅

Buying high,
Selling low,
Chasing short term gains.

Missing out on big market moves.
Sitting on the sidelines of crypto, whilst it went to the moon! 🚀

Just like everybody, I made excuses and justifications for what I was doing:
"I know better than the market, I'll get it right next time..."

But slowly I learnt from my mistakes,
I let go of my bad habits and leaned into new ones…

And now things are working better.
Focusing on the long term,
Making regular contributions every week,
Growing wealth slowly and predictably.

This is the strategy I share with my clients. And it works.

I didn't want to do the boring stuff when it came to investing,
But the boring stuff makes you wealthy in the end.

I’ve been working with a few clients recently who needed help with the question
“Where does the money go?” 🤔

They may earn a reasonable income, but their problem is that they aren’t so strong at keeping tabs on where the money goes.
This leads to an ongoing sense of stress and also feeling like they’re treading water financially, when in reality they could be getting ahead quite easily.

So we meet and have a chat, and see what the situation is.

Usually it’s a case of people ‘kind of knowing’ where their money goes, but also having some BIG assumptions going along with it as well. The trick is in questioning those assumptions. 🪄

Assumptions like: We’re not big spenders, we’re pretty good at shopping only once a week, we don’t eat out much, etc.

Now I’m not knocking any of this, it’s just you’ve got to be honest when making assessments of your spending.

So after a few runs over the budget and getting real numbers on the page, often times we find that the assumptions were a little bit off, and indeed their income versus spending is not as hot as it should be!

That’s ok, because people come into this with a mindset to change.

And once people have a clearer picture of the money that comes in and where it’s going, then that gives us a wedge to start using that difference wisely.

Perhaps it’s paying down more of the mortgage, perhaps its diverting some off into a long term investment, or if you’ve got enough wiggle room, then both.

At the end of the process, instead of stressing my clients out, often they say that the process has been enlightening and gives them more confidence, not less. 👍

As I always say, once you know your numbers, then you can make a plan to use them better.

Is something that you could benefit from too?

My eldest son got a tennis racket for Christmas, and it's been eye opening watching him learn a new skill.

I forget how hard it is for kids to go through the learning process, and though it's grinding and painful at the start, there's always improvement around the corner.
Here goes:

😫First, it's just a tumble of near misses and wild racket swinging, desperately trying to make contact with the ball.

😮Then I show him some basic technique and get him to slow down. Finally he gets some connection with racket and ball.

😃Thirdly, where we're at today, is that he can hit the ball 90% of the time and I can focus on improving his aim and power.

When we start something new, whether it be a playing a sport, posting online or (you guessed it) investing, we all go through the same painful process:

⏯️Floundering at first - No idea what we're doing and wondering if its worth it at all?

▶️Slow discovery and realisation of the basics - We've done it a few times and figured out what works and what doesn't. This is where we need to make the decision to keep going.

⏩️Gradual mastery - Once we've done the reps and convinced ourselves that we can do this, it becomes a case of keeping it going and building on what we discover each time.

⚠️Now lets go back to the start:

Where we trip up, is that when we branch out and try something new, it feels silly and awkward, not exciting and energizing. So we give up.

This year, let's push past the first awkward steps of a New Years plan and get some mastery under our belt!

Let me know what new things you're trying this year, and your strategy for pushing through?

I remember back at the start of 2024 and I said to my wife "Right, let's make a plan."
And you know what happened?

Life happened.
We barely got a chance to get started and everything seemed to get in the way.

Sickness, stress, mortgage increases, income fluctuations.
And nothing eventuated.

But, Turin, you're a financial adviser. Shouldn't you know better?

Yes, but we all fall into the same traps of being too busy, facing unexpected changes, and events that take our attention away from the long term.

We have direct debits going from years ago that keep building wealth in the background, but we never tackled the bigger strategy.

So what's the remedy in 2025?

*Just do it.*

It's time to dust off that plan from a year ago: Find that notebook, excel sheet or sketch on the back of a napkin and take that first actionable step.

Even if it's just starting a direct debit for $20 into savings account. You can do that right now.

Let me know how you get on and what actions you can take to kick things off for 2025?

And if you need help with the plan or taking those first few steps, you know who to call.

Good luck!

See you later 2024, hello 2025!

I'm ending the year camping with the family, also the first holiday with our dog, Tully.

Looking forward to waking up in the New Year away from the hustle and bustle!

Hope you all have a great New Years, spending well deserved time with friends and family.

'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house,
Was the soft sound of typing, the click of a mouse...

A last minute post, an update on Facebook,

Sharing thoughts, facts and photos of adventures that they took.

When out of the dark, came a shout brisk and angry:

"It's Christmas eve, for f$%ks sake, put down your phone and spend time with your family!"

Merry Christmas! 🎄

What are the values that drive you?

What are the values you look for in others?

These days, things seem so frantic

That it feels like what we value can be lost in all the hustle and bustle.

But these are the things that we hold dear to ourselves and we want to see them in other people too!

Here are some of my values that I bring to my work:

🤞Honesty – Tell the truth, even when it’s inconvenient. People need to be able to trust what you say.

⏰Timeliness – Do it when you say you will. And let people know if something is going to be late.

🫡Responsibility – Take ownership of what you do. This means owning up when things don’t go right and being prepared to put it right.

😜Authenticity - Be yourself, sometimes it will attract and sometimes it will repel. But you’ll always end up surrounded by people who like you for you.

When I read through that list, it feels like a tough slog! 😅

But if you value something, then you’re willing to stand behind it
and you do your best to express it to those you work with.

I try to live these values in my work, and hopefully they come through to my clients too.

What values do share with the people around you?

Cheers to all you professionals out there!🥂
I think we’re all looking forward to the Christmas break…

We certainly need it, because It’s been:

Another frantic year,

With high costs of living,

Higher rates on the mortgage,

And too much uncertainty.

Perhaps we can celebrate just getting to the end of it?!

*So let’s take a break*

And when you've recharged, try a bit of planning?

Because next year could well be just as tough as this one.

And having a plan to deal with it

Means you'll feel that much better with whatever comes. 😊

We can say cheers to that!
