It was great to witness the innovative ideas and hard work of the incubated startups as they pitched their ventures — a true testament to the growing energy of Nepal's startup ecosystem. Kudos to King's College and the team for nurturing such promising entrepreneurs!

Nepal's banks are sitting on record idle cash — and history says that's not as safe as it sounds.

This is the third liquidity Overflow in a decade. The first two didn't resolve well.

2016–17: credit expansion outpaced growth, flowing into real estate instead of productive industry.
2020–22: post-COVID credit growth topped 30% — then flipped into a crunch within 18 months, forcing import bans and sharp rate hikes.

Today: deposits are up 13.9% y/y, but credit growth is just 6.5%. Over NPR 1.5 trillion sits idle. And for the first time, bad loans are already rising — tripling to 5.66% — while the surplus is still building.

The pattern: Nepal's liquidity gluts don't stay idle. They resolve into riskier lending — before the next tightening.

The question for 2026: does Nepal build the pipeline to absorb this capital properly, or repeat the cycle?

Nepal has a strange problem: too much money, not enough places for it to go.

Banks are holding record-high deposits. Lending rates have fallen to their lowest in years. By every normal signal, credit should be flowing. It isn't.

We dug into why — and the answer isn't what most commentary assumes. It's not that Nepal lacks capital. It's that the pipeline of well-documented, bankable deals hasn't kept pace with the money sitting in reserve.
