Electricity bills in Nepal will increase from Shrawan 1 due to a new VAT system. Household consumers will pay 5% VAT only on electricity used above 50 units (e.g., if 60 units are used, VAT applies only to 10 units). Businesses, industries, schools, hospitals, and public institutions will pay 13% VAT. The Nepal Electricity Authority has updated its billing system to implement the change. Although the Finance Minister had earlier said electricity prices would not rise, the tariff adjustment has been delayed because the Electricity Regulatory Commission currently has no office holders.
