Muse of the day beautiful Elisa 💕a talented artist and photographer and a portrait of legendary ballerina Anna Pavlova by leading Irish academician Sir John Lavery painted in 1915.
Pavlova was prima ballerina with Diaghilev's Ballet Russes, and is shown here at the height of her fame. Lavery's fluid brush strokes brilliantly convey a sense of energy and charisma, heightened by the halo of white lace around her face, while her heavy-lidded expression suggests a personality that does not suffer fools gladly. The boldness of the brushwork may also be a sign that the painting was executed at speed; often an artist would be allocated no more than an hour or two with a celebrated sitter, the rest to be finished in the studio. All in all, a genuine tour de force by an artist that the passing of time and fashion have consigned to unjust neglect.

The extraordinary self-portraits by Dick Ket, many of which are unknown to the world, quietly invite their viewers into a silent life spent in a small space of a few square meters. They tell a beautiful story like a light, thin feather that flies away and suddenly disappears by the power of the wind.
Dick Ket was a Dutch magic realist painter of the first half of the twentieth century. Born in 1902 in Den Helder, a small port in the far north of the Netherlands, Ket was born with a serious heart defect. This heart defect causes insufficient nourishment of tissues and organs and drumstick fingers or, as doctors say, hippocratic fingers.
His most notable works are his still lifes and self-portraits with “drumstick fingers,” a consequence of his pathology.
Self-Portrait, painted by Duck Ket in 1932 and recreated by me in 2021 is one of the best and notable artwork for me. 🤍
In this self-portrait the composition evokes the classic portraiture of the German and Italian Renaissance. Furthermore, the classic portraiture is displayed through Ket’s bizarre and suffering appearance that is distinguished by the strange pigmentation of his skin that is of a blue-grey tint. His shirt is open on his chest to allude to his heart problem. He tightly tightens the flower in the pitcher to say that life will not escape him without fighting.

EGON SCHIELE, SELF-PORTRAIT WITH CHINESE LANTERN PLANT
1912 vs Self-Portrait by 🍁swipe left ⬅️
The 1912 Self-Portrait with Chinese Lantern Plant is now one of Egon Schiele’s most famous works, one that shows the artist at the height of his artistic prowess. A balanced composition with nothing left to chance, each line has found its continuation or a corresponding counterpart: hair and body mirror each other, trimmed at the horizontal edges of the image, with these dark sections balanced by the bright red-colored lantern fruits. In a further show of balance, Schiele’s head is turned to the right, with his gaze fixed directly toward the observer. The image’s composition is particularly defined by sharp lines and a virtuoso application of color. In this way, the artist presents himself as both fragile and confident at the same time. The work was conceived as a counterpart to his portrait of Wally Neuzil made at the same time, which explains the distinctively asymmetric composition.

Jozef Israëls’s son, Isaac Israels (1865–1934) was raised on a diet of painting and travel. At thirteen, he entered art school in The Hague, where his prodigious talent was soon noticed. In 1881, he began a painting that was purchased before it was completed by Hendrik Willem Mesdag. In 1886, Israels enrolled at Amsterdam’s Art Academy, where he was considered ‘too good’. Israels often spent the summer months with his father in Scheveningen, where he painted seaside scenes in bright colours. In Amsterdam, Israels spent much of his time with George Hendrik Breitner. Both were fascinated by the idea of portraying city life by capturing a passing moment in time. To convey the sense of a snapshot, they cropped their subjects abruptly. Israels was in Paris, London and briefly in the Dutch East Indies from 1903 to 1923. He then returned to The Hague and took over his father's studio. There he remained, producing impressionist paintings in light colours.

“Beware for she excels all women in the magic of her locks, and when she twines them round a young man’s neck, she will not ever set him free again.” These lines from Goethe’s Faust attached by a British Pre-Raphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti, to the original frame of his painting Lady Lilith painted first in 1866-1868 underscore the character of the enchantress Lilith, Adam’s first wife according to Judaic myth. She is a symbol of power, temptation and seduction. Rossetti’s version of Lilith was however a modern interpretation rather than a mythical figure. It represented ‘body’s beauty‘ according to Rossetti’s sonnet. This ‘Modern Lilith‘ contemplates her own beauty in a hand-mirror.
Even though the focus is the beautiful Lilith, the painting is filled with overt flower symbolism and the cluttered, depth less space. The mirror in the background shows just how unreal and bizarre the space is; it shows the reflection of both the candles in the room and the exterior nature scene. The white roses tending to Lilith, admiring her beauty perhaps, symbolise cold, sensuous love and may reflect tradition that roses first ‘blushed‘ upon meeting Eve.
Rossetti also added a feminist dimension to the painting by emphasizing Lilith’s characteristics; her powerful, threatening and seductive attitude and resistance to male domination. She’s beautiful and she’s aware of it. Her massive luxurious red hair, undisguised sensuality and ‘clothes that look as if they’re soon to be removed‘ all make her irresistible to man. The painting represents ‘beauty gazing at itself‘. Lilith is an unobtainable beauty filled with power.
Rossetti first painted ‘Lady Lilith‘ in 1866-68. using F***y Cornforth as a model, but in 1872-73 he altered it to show the beautiful face of Alice Wilding. Alice’s features were considered more refined compared to F***y’s which were considered too earthy. In addition, Rossetti saw in Alice’s features the ability to express both virtue and vice. Our Muse - gorgeous Darina with her red hair, long neck, Cupid-bow lips and soft, dreamy eyes, has perfectly mastered the character and added her strong personality to the image ❤️
