Ivan Marchuk, Weary eyes, acrylic on canvas, 99 x 75 cm, 1993.

An absolute eye catching painting in the art technique “plyontanism”, which is characterized by high levels of detailed strokes that appear to weave into one another. Marchuk is considered to be the creator of this technique.

Ivan Marchuk is Peopleʼs Artist of Ukraine, laureate of the Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine. He created a new painting technique called “Plontanism” — the layering of small lines, from which a unique composition of color and light is built. In Soviet times, Marchuk could not officially exhibit his works for a long time and was subjected to oppression and persecution by the KGB. In 1989-2001 he lived in Australia, Canada and the USA. In 2007, he was included in the rating of “100 geniuses of our time” by the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph. The artist has about 5,000 works in his works, he has held more than 150 personal and about 50 collective exhibitions.

Gerard Willemenot, No title, Egg tempera on panel, 39 x 39 cm.

Willemenot’s “egg tempera” paintings express a reflection of the middle ages and its mystique grotesques. Egg tempera is a permanent fast-drying painting medium consisting of colored pigments mixed with a binder, usually glutinous material such as egg yolk. It was a primary method of painting until after 1500 when it was superseded by the invention of oil painting. His work is influenced by some great elders like Hieronymus Bosch and Breughel, but also by contemporary painters like Albert Drachkovitch and Jacques Poirier whom he knew personally.
