It all starts and ends in the mind...

At first; Dopamine is the hormone responsible for the satisfactory and pleasurable feeling you get when you do things you enjoy.
Anytime you do these things that excite you, your system sends some dopamine to your brain.
Itโs more like the reward your body sends to your brain anytime you do something very exciting. Our brains enjoy it.
E.g: if anytime you play FIFA with your friends, you get really excited; for every round you play, your brain gets to enjoy a spike in dopamine level.
As you carry out these dopamine releasing activities repeatedly, your brain just switches everything.
With time, your brain starts craving for these dopamine releasing activities so much that it literally starts pushing you to do those things whether you want to do them or not.
Remember, at first these activities were just dopamine triggers, but after many cycles of repeating these activities, your brain becomes the trigger that drives you to get these activities done.
This is because as you do them repeatedly, you train your brain to label them as highly rewarding activities.
Your brain is now conditioned to do these activities at a deeper level regardless of the consequences.

This is exactly how the brain works, first you train the brain to label things painful or pleasurable, then with time, it becomes an automatic process.
This Dopamine conditioning is a two-edged sword.
Because, if you train your brain to link productive activities with high dopamine spikes, then your brain is going to be conditioned to do productive tasks by default.
And it gets really exciting when your brain starts to enjoy doing very productive tasks, because your brain will constantly push you to do the very important things without feeling the pain others will feel when they do these things.
On the other hand, if you train your brain to link junk activities with high dopamine spikes, then your brain is going to be conditioned to do and enjoy these junk stuffs every time.
At this point, youโve hacked your brain to diligently drag you into the mud. And it becomes very difficult to stop doing these activities even if you badly want to stop doing them.
This is the reason why you donโt enjoy doing highly productive things like reading a book for one hour, but you can spend 3 hours reading random comments under a random post on a gossip blog.
Itโs the same reading process, but your brain attaches pain to reading a book and pleasure to reading comments because over time youโve enjoyed reading and laughing at sarcastic random comments.
Now you hate it when you spend three hours reading these comments but you only feel the pain after the deed is done and it will repeat itself tomorrow - because you are no longer in control.
At that level, YOUR DOPAMINE IS MESSED UP!!!
If this is true, here are the two steps you can follow to recondition your brain so that it starts helping you achieve your goals:

This means avoid the activities that trigger more dopamine into your system for a while.
You want to give your brain space to reboot and start seeing things the way they are.
This process could be painful or seem impossible to do, but this is how you will save yourself.
This could mean you going a week without your phone, or without coming on social media or without seeing a movie etc.

If you stop doing junk tasks and you donโt switch to productive tasks, they are going to gradually creep back into your life

What you want to do is to replace your dopamine triggers with productive and helpful activities.
E.g: instead of going to social media to contribute to the latest trend, read a book
At first, you are not going to enjoy it, but hereโs a simple way you can trick your brain to link reading a book to pleasure:
If you read for one hour, reward yourself.
There are a lot of ways to reward yourself.
If you like, open a savings account; anytime you do something very productive, save some extra money - it will work even if the amount is very small; your brain will count it as better than zero (it's just a neural-signal).
If you do these repeatedly, with time, you are going to condition your brain to link these productive tasks with great pleasure even if you remove the source of reward.
Then it becomes easier for you to do productive activities, you are able to do them even without any external motivation.
Which will ultimately lead to you achieving your goals.
