In two weeks, the Nigerian equities market lost ₦5.9 trillion in market value.

But does a falling price mean it’s time to panic or it’s time to buy?
Not necessarily.

Sometimes, a pullback can create opportunities. But the real question isn’t “Is the stock cheaper?”, it’s “Is it now worth buying?”

That’s what we’re breaking down in this edition of Market in Plain English.

What if you could own a piece of NNPCL?
Sounds far-fetched? Maybe not.

The Nigerian Exchange Group recently met with President Tinubu to discuss how Nigeria can use the capital market to raise more long-term capital for businesses, infrastructure and economic growth.

One of the ideas discussed was listing stakes in major Nigerian assets, including NNPCL, NLNG and Indorama Eleme Petrochemicals.

But what does that actually mean for you?
It could mean that, instead of simply hearing about some of Nigeria’s biggest companies, you could potentially become a shareholder in them.

And that’s the power of the capital market: it creates a bridge between businesses that need capital and people who want to participate in their growth.

What happens to your shares when you’re no longer around?

This was one of the things discussed at a recent SEC stakeholder engagement on unclaimed dividends, probate and share transmission.

There are Nigerians who have investments they don’t know about.
There are families who don’t know that a loved one had shares.
And there are dividends that remain unclaimed because beneficiaries don’t know where to start.

The good news?
Your shares don’t simply disappear when you die. There are legal processes that allow your investments and dividends to be transferred to the rightful beneficiaries.

But this is why keeping your records updated and knowing what you own is very important.

And if you ever receive a message or call about unclaimed dividends, don’t panic and don’t ignore it either. Verify it.

Your financial assets deserve the same attention as your bank account.
Do you have unclaimed dividends?

When a company announces record profits, most people celebrate the headline and move on.

Shareholders pay attention for a different reason.
Owning a stock means owning a small piece of that business.

So when the company grows, your investment may grow with it. And when companies share profits through dividends, shareholders may receive a portion.

That’s why investing isn’t just about watching prices move.
It’s about understanding the business behind the stock.

If you could own shares in one publicly listed company today, which would it be? 👇
