Zamfara Moves to Empower Over One Million Women, Girls and Vulnerable Persons Through WEE Policy

The Zamfara State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the domestication and implementation of the Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Policy, a strategic initiative aimed at improving the livelihoods of over one million women, girls, persons with special needs and other marginalized groups across the state.

The commitment was reiterated by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Aisha M.Z. Anka, during a three-day workshop from 29 May to 1st June 2026, on the Five-Year Domestication of the National Women’s Economic Empowerment Policy in Zamfara State, held at Karma Guest Inn, Sokoto.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Garba Aliyu Gayari, the Commissioner stated that promoting women’s education, protection and financial inclusion would not only improve their economic wellbeing but also strengthen family livelihoods and contribute to sustainable community development.

Dr. Anka noted that the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal has demonstrated strong commitment to the advancement of women through policies and programmes that promote inclusion in education, agriculture, healthcare and political leadership.

According to her, empowering women and girls is essential for meaningful participation in the economic growth and development of the state.

“We need more partnerships from the Federal Government, the World Bank and other development partners to support women in Zamfara State socially, politically and economically for sustainable development,” she said.

The Commissioner also urged participants drawn from government agencies, parastatals, civil society organisations (CSOs), traditional institutions and religious bodies to contribute actively to the domestication process while ensuring that the policy aligns with the norms and values of the people of Zamfara State.

Earlier, the consultant engaged by Women Environmental Programme (WEP), Mrs. Damaris Uja, explained that the workshop was organised by Zamfara State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, supported by Women Environmental Programme (WEP) a Non governmental organisation (NGO) to strengthen women's and youths' access to their rights through sustainable environmental, socio-political and economic development initiatives.

She identified environmental pollution, gender-based violence (GBV), and lack of financial inclusion as some of the major challenges affecting women and girls in many parts of the country.

Speaking during the policy review and validation session, the lead facilitator, Prof. Magdalyne Dura, described the domestication process as a collective responsibility that requires collaboration among all stakeholders in Zamfara State.

“This review and validation process requires teamwork and commitment from stakeholders who understand the socio-economic realities of the state. My role is to guide the process towards achieving a policy that reflects the aspirations and values of the people of Zamfara State,” she said.

Prof. Dura further encouraged participants to work together in ensuring that the policy is effectively domesticated in line with the cultural and Islamic values of the state.

Participants at the workshop made valuable contributions and recommendations towards developing a comprehensive and practical Women’s Economic Empowerment Policy that will address the needs of women, girls, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups across Zamfara State.

Suspected Serial Killer Akaninyene from Obot Akara Arrested in Creektown Forest Hut
By Ahmad Abdul ,Calabar

Akaninyene, an indigene of Obot Akara, was arrested yesterday in Creektown following intelligence that linked him to the disappearance and murder of a recent victim. Security operatives, acting on the tip, tracked him to an isolated hut he built inside a forest in Abanyama, Ukim Ita Community, Creektown.

On arrival, men of the Nigerian Army and a tactical special forces squad, led by community youths and elders, attempted to secure the area. Akaninyene noticed the invasion, ran into the hut to retrieve a weapon, but was quickly surrounded. He tried to escape into the forest but was apprehended by the tactical team.

A search of the compound revealed multiple shallow graves. About 8 graves were uncovered, each containing the remains of up to 5 people buried without their heads. Plantain crops had been planted over the graves to conceal them. The discovery suggests the killings may have been ongoing for some time.

During interrogation, Akaninyene allegedly confessed to killing about 30 people in the community who had gone missing without trace. He was forced to lead operatives to the graves, where bodies without heads were exhumed.

He further confessed that the last killing, which triggered his arrest, occurred on Tuesday, 26th May 2026. He claimed he carried it out with the help of a lady who allegedly held the victim’s head. According to him, the lady was used to lure victims to their deaths, and he described the method they used.

The alarm was first raised after community members heard a struggle and cries from the last victim. Hon. Councilor representing Creektown Ward 1, Apostle Hon. Ene Itam, alongside the Ward Chairman, youths, and elders, reported the case of missing persons to the Executive Chairman of Odukpani LGA, Rt. Hon. Elder Chief Ukpong Etim Asido. He immediately alerted security operatives, who responded swiftly.

The discovery shocked the entire community as families realized the perpetrator lived among them. The Leader of the 8th Legislative Assembly in Odukpani Local Government Area, Hon. Effiom Ekene, and Hon. Emmanuel of Adibo Efut Ward also joined efforts to ensure Akaninyene was captured. The Leader of Council commended the Executive Chairman for the quick response of military and police tactical teams, and praised Creektown youths for their vigilance.

Following the arrest, community youths have intensified bush-combing operations to uncover other possible hideouts linked to similar crimes.

Security agencies say Akaninyene’s confessions are expected to help in tracking and arresting others involved in the same criminal network. Residents of Cross River State are urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to authorities immediately.
Police public relantion officer cross river state cimmand ASP Sunday Eteikpe confirmed the incudent happened
