In the late part of April and first week of May, we had a 100% practical training during which we built pens to be used for the training so our students would grasp the knowledge better and faster.

The last week of April was used to carry out of the pre-stocking activities which includes but not limited to construction of the pen, treatment of the soil, treatment of the dried banana leaves, wetting the soil, filling the pen with the treated soil and dried banana leaves.

On the first of May, we stocked the pen with 20 point of lays Archachatina maginata suturalis (AMS), and today behind the last day of August i.e. three months after stocking the pen, this is our result so far.

WHY YOU SHOULD INVEST IN SNAIL FARMING.

Snail meat is a good source of protein. It is rich in iron and calcium, but low in fat and cholesterol, compared to other animal protein sources. Snails are also environmental-friendly.

Snail business is an exceptionally good agriculture business that would yield short and long-term financial impact and would also drive social impact and social change because of the following reasons:

1. PROFITABILITY
Snail farming in Nigeria is very profitable. The gross profit margin possible in snail farming is a minimum of 100%. You can buy a grower snail for N100 and feed with concentrated feed specially made for snails growth and sell between N300-N500 within 6 months, not to talk about breeding.

2. INEXPENSIVE
Snail farming is also an inexpensive farming business. The cost of setting up and running a snail farm is very low especially when compared to other types of animal farming. You won’t spend too much in feeding them, apart for the special feed snails eat plants and vegetable that are abundantly available. They also eat fruits, the market leftovers are always available at a give-away prices or even for free!

3. LONGEVITY
Snails have a very long life span, they can live for up to 10 years. This means that you can setup your snail farm and have your snails reproducing and growing to market size for over 10 years.

4. EASE
Snail farming is not stressful. The activities involved in snail farming are very simple and easy to perform. You won’t expend too much energy in starting and maintaining your snail farm.

5. MARKET
There is huge market for Snail locally and internationally, the business became more interesting recently with the entrance of some big offtaking company that are into processing.

INTRODUCTION.

Snail farming (heliciculture) is the practice of keeping and rearing edible land snail for personal and/or commercial purposes.

There are a number of edible land snails but not all of them are suitable for rearing and readily marketable. Among the edible land snails, we are placing our focus on the _Archachatina maginata_ and two of its varieties i.e _oven_ and _suturalis._ Snail farmers focus on this species of snail for its meat. However, people rear Achatina species to for their slime as the produce relatively more slime than Archachatina species but they have less meat.

So if you're going into snail farming, it's your duty to know what you're rearing for so to decide which species of snail you need to get.

In this training, as I have said earlier, we will focus on AMO & AMS. AMO being Archachatina maginata o**m and AMS is Archachatina maginata suturalis.
These two varieties have some significant differences which enable snail farmers choose which suits their desire.
Differences between AMO and AMS.
AMOs are bigger than AMS.
AMSs have higher productivity than AMOs.
AMOs are more expensive and more marketable than AMS but AMSs are more profitable. (I'll explain this later) to continue, contact us on WhatsApp only +234 903 985 5269

SNAIL FARMING MANUAL FOR A TOTAL BEGINNERS

CONSTRUCTION OF A STANDARD SNAIL PEN

Snail farming, otherwise known as heliciculture is the practice of rearing and keeping edible land snail for commercial or personal purpose. Snail farming, just like every other livestock and agricultural business, is a very lucrative venture as snail requires a very low capital and has registered usage in the food, medical and cosmetic industry.
The first step to starting your snail farming is getting the snail pen ready which we will talk about today. There are three main types of snail pens which includes wooden pen, concrete pen, and screen house. Today, we will focus on the construction of the wooden pen as we want to start small and grow from there.

CONSTRUCTION OF WOODEN SNAIL PEN

The construction of snail pen requires hard woods which are resistant to termites and other insects that can affect the quality of the wood. The woods are to be finely scrapped to be very smooth. A standard wooden pen should be constructed to contain/house 40 Point of Lays and/or adult snails and should be about 2.5ft long, 5ft wide and 2ft deep. The cover should be made with mosquito net and “boko haram” net such that the mosquito net is under the “boko haram” net. Check the image below to understand better.

PROTECTION OF SNAIL FROM INSECTS AND PESTS

The pen should be constructed with no space for small insect to get into the pen so as to keep the snails safe and comfortable. The stands of the pen should be submerged in small bowls containing used engine oil such that any crawling insect that tries to climb onto the stand to get access into the pen would have been killed by the engine oil.

ADDITION AND TREATMENT OF SOIL

The ideal soil used for flooring snail pen is loamy soil with humus content. The soil looks black and it should be treated with dry heat at about 80-100℃ to kill all the microorganisms and eggs of some harmful insects that may be present in the soil. The soil should however be allowed to cool before transfer into the pen.

ADDITION OF THE DRIED BANANA LEAVES

Snails are nocturnal animals and they love shades and darkness a lot, hence the need for dried banana leaves. The leaves should be treated in boiling water to kill eggs and larvae of some insects that might be present on the leaves.

When all these are done, you can say your pen is ready to house snails.

From this, it should be understood that the idea of this pen is to simulate the snails' natural habitat while confining then within the available space and use their reproductivity to our own commercial and/or personal use.
