We filed LAW Suit Against the ZAROTA

We the Public Interest Lawyers have formally filed a Fundamental Rights Enforcement Suit at the High Court of Zamfara State (Gusau Judicial Division) against ZAROTA

This legal action targets the systemic abuse of power and persistent unlawful conduct by officers of the **Zamfara State Road Traffic Agency (ZAROTA)*.

The suit originated from an incident of **February 28, 2026, at Sabon Gari, Gusau* wherein ZAROTA officers harassed me and forcibly seized my mobile phone for documenting their act of Human rights violation activities in a public space.

The case would serve as a judicial challenge to a broader pattern of human rights violations of ZAROTA's marshals during road operations especially in Gusau the state capital.

We equally invite the court to affirm and declare the following:
1- Constitutional Right to Record:That citizens have a protected right to document public officers performing their duties in public spaces.

2- Prohibition of Illegal Seizures:That ZAROTA lacks the statutory authority power to seize private property, including mobile phones, without a valid court order.
*3- Cessation of Abuse:* That acts of assault, threats, and intimidation constitute direct violations of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

4- Mandatory Identification: That operating without visible uniforms or identification tags violates the *Zamfara State Road Traffic Agency Law, 2015, and undermines public accountability.

*We further also demand the following Reliefs: to include Perpetual Injunction:* A court order permanently restraining ZAROTA from future harassment or unlawful seizure of citizenaproperty.and seek for Public Apology formal from the Agency. While urging the court also for Exemplary Damages by way of Financial compensation for the gross violation of the Applicant’s fundamental Rights.

"Fundamental Rights are not privileges granted by the state; they are constitutional guarantees that every authority is bound to respect."

This suit is a commitment to ensuring that no agency in Zamfara State operates above the law. We remain dedicated to reinforcing transparency and the Rule of Law for a better Zamfara and beyond.

Signed:
M. Umar, Esq.
M. Sani Kaura, Esq.
